List of stumbling blocks in Hirschaid

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This list of stumbling blocks in Hirschaid contains the stumbling blocks that were laid by Gunter Demnig in the Upper Franconian market in Hirschaid as part of the art project of the same name . A brass plaque is anchored on the top of each of the concrete blocks with an edge length of ten centimeters, which are embedded in the sidewalks in front of the former homes of the victims. This provides information about the names, year of birth and fate of the people who are to be remembered.

The first stumbling blocks in Hirschaid were set on April 25, 2013 together with a major laying campaign in Bamberg, and another was added on September 12, 2013. Up to and including November 29, 2014 there were seven stumbling blocks in Hirschaid, the laying of which was prepared and supported by the Willy-Aron- Gesellschaft Bamberg. The last two stumbling blocks so far were relocated on October 17, 2017 in the Sassanfahrt district .

The laying of the stumbling blocks for the married couple Carola and Siegfried Plaut and their son Gerhard was initiated by students in the 9th grade of the Hirschaid state secondary school. As part of a voluntary elective course, they had dealt with Jewish culture and history, in particular with the history of the Bamberg and Hirschaid Jews.

The Jewish Merel family lived in Sassanfahrt from 1931 to 1939. The couple had five children. Lotte, Esther and Nathan were sent to England on a Kindertransport, while the two youngest, Sophie and Jenny, fled with their parents to the south of France. There they were arrested in 1940 and the father was interned separately from the rest of the family in different camps. The mother died in the camp in 1941, the father was deported to Auschwitz. The daughters Sophie and Jenny were brought to a children's home in Switzerland by a Jewish aid organization. Family members from England and Israel came to lay the Stolpersteine.
