List of stumbling blocks in Nuremberg
Stolpersteine arecobblestones with a brass surface createdby the artist Gunter Demnig , which reminds of the fate ofJews murdered, deported, expelled or driven to suicideduring the time of the National Socialist dictatorship .
In the summer of 1933 there were 7502 Jews in Nuremberg . At the beginning of the deportations in autumn 1941, there were still 1,835 Jews living in Nuremberg (within the meaning of the Nuremberg Laws ). When the Second World War ended in Nuremberg on April 20, 1945, around 40 Jews were still living in Nuremberg.
The stumbling blocks, which are financed from private donations, are generally set in the sidewalk in front of the last apartment of the mostly murdered people, so that passers-by notice them, that is, in a figurative sense, stumble over them.
If the information on the list is more comprehensive than on the stumbling blocks themselves, they are taken from the work “Memorial Book for the Nuremberg Victims of the Shoah”, unless otherwise stated.
On the deportations of the Nuremberg Jews see: Deportation of Jews from Nuremberg
