Overview and project responsibilities
The Stolpersteine project by the sculptor and action artist Gunter Demnig, which has existed since 1995, is a reminder of the victims of Nazi tyranny in Germany and other European countries during the Nazi era . Since 2004, 651 stumbling blocks have been laid in Bremen, from 2005 also by vocational students at the Bremen school center on Alwin-Lonke-Straße. A total of 91 stones were laid in Bremerhaven between 2006 and 2014.
The project responsibilities for the stumbling blocks have developed differently in Bremen and Bremerhaven: The Bremen association, Erinnern für die Zukunft e. V. and the state center for political education Bremen in cooperation with the initiative group Stolpersteine Bremen . The Bremerhaven Cultural Office is responsible for the project in the Bremerhaven municipality. Both in Bremen and Bremerhaven, the stumbling blocks are financed through sponsorships .
