List of stumbling blocks in Gaukönigshofen
This list of stumbling blocks in Gaukönigshofen contains the stumbling blocks that were laid as part of the art project of the same name by Gunter Demnig in the Lower Franconian community of Gaukönigshofen , including the Acholshausen district . They are intended to commemorate the victims of National Socialism who lived and worked in Gaukönigshofen.
Even if the Jewish community of Acholshausen was not officially dissolved until 1937, the Jewish residents of the then independent community of Acholshausen had already joined the Gaukönigshofen religious community in 1895 . Since 1988, the restored synagogue building in Gaukönigshofen has housed the memorial for the Jewish victims in the Würzburg district. The names of 29 former citizens who were abducted and murdered from Gaukönigshofen are listed on a plaque attached there.
The impetus for the laying of stumbling blocks in Gaukönigshofen was provided by a Gaukönigshofer who emigrated to the USA at the beginning of the Second World War . In 2004 he applied to be allowed to set stumbling blocks in front of his parents' house, the property at Königshof 7, in order to commemorate his relatives. The local council approved this with a large majority. On September 24, 2008, Gunter Demnig laid a total of 23 stumbling blocks in Gaukönigshofen: 2 in Acholshausen and 21 in Gaukönigshofen. A brass plaque is anchored on the top of each of the concrete blocks with an edge length of ten centimeters, which are embedded in the sidewalks in front of the former homes of the victims. This provides information about the names, year of birth and fate of the people who are to be remembered.
