List of the administrative divisions of the People's Republic of China according to the Human Development Index

The following list sorts the provinces of the People's Republic of China according to their Human Development Index .

The Human Development Index is a method of calculating the level of development of a country or region. The HDI not only takes into account the gross national income per capita, but also life expectancy and the duration of training based on the number of school years a 25-year-old has completed and the expected duration of a child's education at school age. The HDI was essentially developed by the Pakistani economist Mahbub ul Haq , who worked closely with the Indian economist Amartya Sen and the British economist and politician Meghnad Desai .

Calculation method

As of the Human Development Report 2010, the three dimensions are calculated as follows:

• Life expectancy index: life expectancy at birth (LE)
• Education index: Average school attendance (DSD) and expected school attendance (VSD) in years
• Standard of living : Gross National Income (GNI) per capita (GNIpk), PPP US $

   2.2. Estimated School Attendance Index (VSDI) ${\displaystyle ={\dfrac {{\text{VSD}}-0}{18{,}0-0}}}$

3. Income Index (EI) ${\displaystyle ={\dfrac {\ln({\text{BNEpk}})-\ln(100)}{\ln(75000)-\ln(100)}}}$

Finally, the HDI is calculated as a geometric mean from the three dimensions: ${\displaystyle {\text{HDI}}={\sqrt[{3}]{{\text{LEI}}\cdot {\text{BI}}\cdot {\text{EI}}}}.}$

LE: life expectancy at birth

DSD: Average duration of school attendance (number of years that a person aged 25 or older has attended school)

VSD: Estimated length of school attendance (number of years a 5-year-old child will likely go to school)

BNEpk: Gross national income per capita adjusted for purchasing power in US dollars

All 27 provinces or autonomous areas, the 4 cities directly under the government and the 2 special administrative areas of the People's Republic of China according to their Human Development Index from 1995 to 2015. For comparison purposes, a country with a similar HDI in the same year is also given. With a value of 0.738, China was ranked 90th out of 188 countries in the Human Development Index. The cities and the coastal provinces in particular achieved high values. The provinces in the interior of China are the least developed.
