Los Campesinos! is a seven-piece British indie pop band from Cardiff , Wales, founded in 2006 . The name comes from Spanish and means "The farmers".

history

2006: Formation and contract with Wichita

The band formed in early 2006 at Cardiff University . In the beginning it was just Neil ( guitar ), Ellen ( electric bass ) and Ollie ( drums ). Tom (guitar, songwriter ) joined in March . Gareth ( vocals , songwriter, glockenspiel ), Harriet ( violin , keyboard ) and Aleksandra (vocals, keyboard) followed later . Tom met Neil after hearing him discuss Sufjan Stevens in a club. Although the band formed in Cardiff, none of the band members are Welsh . The first own songs were long post-rock pieces.

Their first appearance was on May 8th at a student union party . As a result, they played more and more in the Cardiff area. Los Campesinos released their first demo recording! a little later with the songs Death to Los Campesinos! , It Started With a Mixx , Sweet Dreams, Sweet Cheeks and the very popular You! Me! Dancing! . The songs were also posted on the Internet. This and the energetic live shows led to them being played on BBC Radio 1 Wales' evening program "Beth & Huw's" . Their fame grew quickly and in August 2006 they became the opening act for the Canadian indie rock band Broken Social Scene . In November 2006 they signed with the independent label Wichita Recordings .

2007: First singles and sticking fingers into sockets

Los Campesinos! - February 2007

On February 26, 2007 the first single was released, a double A-side with the songs We Throw Parties, You Throw Knives and Don't Tell Me to Do the Math (s) . In April they signed with the Arts & Crafts label for the American and Canadian markets. In June Los Campesinos released! You! Me! Dancing! as a limited 7 "single , accompanied by several appearances in Bath , Newport , Cardiff and London . The EP Sticking Fingers into Sockets was released on July 3rd by Arts & Crafts, produced by Dave Newfeld, who also worked with Broken Social Scene. Their first tour of the UK began in October, when the single The International Tweexcore Underground was released. At the end of February 2008 they played four gigs in Germany, a. a. at the Haldern Pop Festival .

2008: Hold on Now, Youngster… and We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed

Hold on Now, Youngster… is the name of the first album , which was released in Germany and Ireland on February 22nd, 2008 and in Great Britain on February 25th. In the US and Canada , the album was delayed on April 1st. A Europe and North America tour followed to accompany the publication. Critics praised the debut album. Los Campesinos had their first TV appearance! on February 9th on Irish late night show Tubridy Tonight.

On August 1st, the band announced that their second studio album was called We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed and should be released towards the end of the year. It was produced by John Goodmanson and recorded in Seattle . The final release was in the UK on October 27, 2008. The band stated that the album was not a moneymaking. The songs are not b-sides, rarities or “songs that weren't good enough for the album, cobbled together with some remixes and live recordings.” No singles were released and the album is limited.

In October they toured the UK with No Age and Times New Viking . They had their first appearances in South America in April 2009 in Argentina , Colombia and Venezuela .

2009: Romance Is Boring and departure of Aleksandra

Los Campesinos recorded their third album! 2009 in Stamford , Connecticut with John Goodmanson . The recordings were completed in June. The album was recorded before and after the second half of their US tour and mixed in Wales in June. In addition, the first two song titles were released: This Is a Flag. There Is No Wind and Straight in at 101 . On June 2, the band announced on their website that Aleksandra is leaving the band after the US tour in August to continue studying. The album was completed on June 22nd and contains 16 songs. In December they supported The Cribs as the opening act. On September 9th, the first song (The Sea Is a Good Place to Think of the Future) from the new album was offered for free download on the official website . In addition, Ellen shot a music video, which was also published on the Internet. On September 21st, Kim, Gareth's sister, was introduced as a new band member. The album's first single was There Are Listed Buildings and was sold during their UK concert tour in October. The album's name, Romance Is Boring , the song title and the February 1, 2010 release date in the United Kingdom (January 26 in the United States ) were announced on the official website on October 25. The album was recorded in Seattle between March and June 2009 and, as with We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed, produced by John Goodmanson. Also have Jamie Stewart ( Xiu Xiu ), Zac Pennington ( Parenthetical Girls ) and Jherek Bischoff ( The Dead Science ) participated. The band wrote about the album in their blog entry:

"It is a record about the death and decay of the human body, sex, lost love, mental breakdown, football and, ultimately, that there probably isn't a light at the end of the tunnel."

2010: Ollie leaves

On June 26, 2010, Ollie gave Campesinos! announced that he had left the band. In a statement, the band said they asked Ollie to leave the band in order to continue as a group. All concerts planned for the summer will still take place.

An EP called All's Well That Ends was released in advance on July 15th at the Wichita's 10th birthday concert in London, before it was officially released in a limited edition on July 19th. The EP includes four alternative versions of songs from the previous album and is the first release Rob Campesinos! contributed. The Wichita concert was played by new drummer Jason, who had previously been the band's tour manager and merchandise seller since 2007 . They later posted a picture on Twitter with the title "The band Los Campesinos!" Showing Rob and Jason, indicating that they are both full members. In October they toured the United States and Canada with Johnny Foreigner .

On December 8, 2010, the band announced the quarterly fanzine Heat Rash and released the Christmas song Kindle a Flame in Her Heart as a free download on SoundCloud .

2011–2012: Harriet and Ellen left, Hello Sadness

On May 1, 2011, the band finished their work on the new studio album Hello Sadness , which was released on November 14, 2011. The recordings were made from April to May in Mas Pau, Catalonia , with producer John Goodmanson.

In August, the violinist Harriet announced that she was leaving the band in order to continue studying.

In December 2012, bassist Ellen left the band. Work on a new album should begin in early 2013.

2013–2014: Live album, No Blues and Christmas EP

The band's first live album, A Good Night for a Fistfight , was released on May 4, 2013. It was recorded on December 15, 2012 at Islington Assembly Hall in London. The studio recordings for the fifth album ran from late May to late June in north Wales.

At the end of August 2013, the band announced that their fifth studio album is called No Blues and should be released in October. In addition, a first download single was released with What Death Leaves Behind . Welsh actor Craig Roberts directed the music video for the second single Avocado, Baby .

On December 8, 2014, it was released under the title A Los Campesinos! Christmas a Christmas EP by the band with six songs, some of which have already been published elsewhere.

Since 2016: Sick Scenes

In June 2016 Los Campesinos !, together with producer John Goodmanson, recorded their sixth studio album in the Portuguese municipality of Fridão . A month later, the band announced they were hosting a one-day music festival called Us Vs Them in Leeds in December 2016 .

The album is titled Sick Scenes and was released on February 24, 2017 on the Wichita Recordings label.
