Lovech [ ɫɔvɛtʃ ] ( Bulgarian Ловеч , Engl. Transcription Lovech ) is a district town in Bulgaria with 34,002 inhabitants (December 31, 2016). The city, which lies on both sides of the Ossam River in the northern regions of the Balkan Mountains , is an industrial and wine-growing center as well as the metropolitan seat of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church . In the Middle Ages the city was called Owetsch .

history

Because of the important strategic location, the Romans built the Melta fort . In the Middle Ages, the fortress was the seat of the future Bulgarian rulers, Ivan Assen I and Theodor Peter . In 1187 the peace treaty with Byzantium was signed here, which sealed the establishment of the Second Bulgarian Empire .

During the Ottoman rule, the city was an important center of crafts and trade and was called Altın Lofça (“golden Lovech”) because of its prosperity . The revolutionary Wassil Levski (1837–1873) chose the city as the seat of internal resistance and the struggle for the liberation of Bulgaria from Turkish occupation.

During communist rule, there was a labor camp near Lovech where many opponents of the regime were murdered. The induction into the camp was mostly politically motivated. Reasons for this could be: the destruction of Stalin monuments , aid for enemy (German) soldiers, membership of the Roman Catholic Church in Bulgaria or the farmers' association, training completed in non-communist countries, espionage for "Anglo-American capitalism " or Criticism of the presence of the Red Army in Bulgaria etc.

Since 2005 the city has been named after the Melta Point , a headland of Livingston Island in Antarctica, thanks to the name of the Roman fort . The same has been true since 2012 for Lovech Heights , a mountain range in Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula .

economy

The up-and-coming Chinese automobile company Great Wall opened an assembly plant in Lovech in February 2012. It is the first assembly plant of a Chinese car company in the European Union.

Covered bridge

Covered bridge : The builder Kolju Fitscheto (1800–1881) built a covered bridge in 1872–1874 - the most famous building in the city. The bridge burned down completely in 1925 and was rebuilt in 1931, although reinforced concrete was used instead of wood (as in the original) . In 1981 and 1982 there was a reconstruction in the style of the original bridge.

Sports

Lovetsch is also known for its football club Litex Lovetsch . The football club took part in the 2007 UEFA Cup. On September 18, 2007 the game Litex Lovetsch against Hamburger SV took place in the Gradski Stadium. It ended 0: 1 for Hamburger SV. HSV won the second leg 3-1.
