The Military History Museum of the Bundeswehr - Berlin-Gatow Airfield is a branch of the Dresden Military History Museum of the Bundeswehr . It houses a large part of the Bundeswehr's aviation history collection and shows the history of military aviation in Germany from 1884 to the present day. The collection goes back to the Air Force Museum , which was once founded in Appen near Hamburg . In addition to large exhibits (fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, air defense systems and ground service equipment), u. a. Documents, uniforms, equipment, etc. are on display. Media stations and an extensive film collection complete the exhibition and allow an expanded view of the objects.

Goal setting

The MHM of the Bundeswehr, based in Berlin-Gatow, presents the history of military aviation and air warfare in Germany from its beginnings to the present day and places it in the overall historical context. This includes the treatment of air war operations by opposing armed forces in the world wars against Germany and the presence of foreign armed forces on German soil after 1945. As part of a comprehensive redesign, the history of technology will in future take a back seat to a cultural-historical approach to aerial warfare. Topics in this sense will be: anonymization of the perpetrator and victim relationship in aerial warfare, changing role models, overcoming borders and delimiting the war, the military and society in the 20th century. The representation of the technology is to be integrated into the military-historical representation. The museum collects military historical material as part of its exhibition.

history

The history of the museum goes back to 1957 when RAR a. D. Fritz Helmut Jaeckel had started collecting uniforms and military items, which he initially exhibited in a traditional room at the Uetersen Air Base near Pinneberg . After his collection had grown, a former sports hall on the air base was made available to him.

In 1963 the Kuratorium Luftwaffe Museum Uetersen e. V. was founded, which later became the Friends of the Air Force Museum of the Bundeswehr e. V. emerged . In 1967, the association received its first large-scale exhibits with retired Bundeswehr aircraft, which were exhibited in two disused hangars from 1972.

On September 4, 1987, the Bundeswehr took over the collection, which was now called the Bundeswehr Air Force Museum and has been under the Military History Research Office since 1994 .

After flight operations on June 30, 1994 on the grounds of the Gatow military airfield , the museum moved there and opened its doors for the first time on September 23, 1995 as a "Museum under construction". The military historian Harald Potempa headed the museum from 1997 to 2005 .

As part of the general renovation of the Bundeswehr museum system, the organizational merger of the Air Force Museum with the Dresden Military History Museum of the Bundeswehr was decided with effect from July 1, 2010 . The museum at the Berlin-Gatow airfield will, however, be retained as an independent branch.

The museum became an institutional member of the Association of Restorers (VdR) as early as 2009 , and since December of this year it has had a new academic framework. Associated with this is a new concept that will keep the museum busy until beyond 2020.

On October 1, 2011, the museum was renamed the Military History Museum of the Bundeswehr - Berlin-Gatow Airfield. The new name not only clarifies the affiliation of the museum to the MHM, but also takes into account an expansion of the content of the object area: the theme of the museum is not only the air force, but air warfare and military aviation in Germany (including army and naval aviation, air defense, des Civil defense, the former opponents of the war and the allies).

In 2018 it became known that the museum would be fundamentally redesigned, so Hangar 4 is also to become a permanent exhibition area.

The current director of the museum is Lieutenant Colonel Ralf-Gunther Leonhardt.

Exhibitions / museum grounds and buildings

Museum plan

After various renovations, the large exhibits have been presented on the outdoor area and in Hangar 3 since 2018. There a newly designed interim permanent exhibition with the title "Zwischenlandung" shows the development of military aviation in Germany.

The history of the Gatow Air Force base, in particular the role of the airfield as an airlift base, is shown in a side wing of Hangar 3. The exhibition is entitled “You can't miss Gatow”. In another side wing, the exhibition “Falkenstein Goes to War” is dedicated to the aerial warfare in the First World War.

There is also space for smaller special exhibitions in the side wing of hangar 3 and on the ground floor of the tower building.

Since parts of the collection are repeatedly restored (e.g. aircraft on the open-air site) or loaned to other museums, not all of the large exhibits are always on site. Some large exhibits have been loaned to the Rechlin Aviation Museum so that they can continue to be shown to the public.

Hangar 1 serves as a restoration workshop, while hangars 5, 6, 7 and 8 are depots. As a rule, they are not accessible to visitors.

The museum still has two runways, each 830 meters long, which are opened for vintage cars and new aircraft on display during the annual airport festivals. Some exhibits have been flown in, such as the C-160 "Transall" or the English Electric "Canberra".

The long-term plan is to convert hangars 3 and 4, the tower building and the old fire station into exhibition areas. In the future concept, Hangar 4, which is currently inaccessible, is to be given the function of a central reception building.
