Maiski ( Russian Ма́йский ) is a settlement (possjolok) in the Belgorod Oblast in Russia with 8,748 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The place is about 12 km as the crow flies southwest of the center of the Oblast Administrative Center Belgorod and is in fact its suburb; the state border with Ukraine is a good 20 km away.

Maisky is de jure administrative center of the Rajons Belgorodski ; In fact, many administrative institutions of the Rajon are located in the eponymous city of Belgorod, which itself does not belong to the Rajon, but forms its own urban district . The settlement is also the seat of the rural community Maiskoje selskoje posselenije, which also includes the village of Novaya Derewnja (2 km southwest) and the settlement Politotdelski (6 km southwest).

history

The place is in the area of the former village Pavlovka and developed in its current form from the 1950s, accelerated from the 1970s.

From 1957 an agricultural experimental farm with an associated settlement was established there, which was given its current name on January 29, 1968, derived from the month's name May , which is the same in Russian (here in accordance with Soviet customs with ideological reference, around May Day ). A science center was established there from 1971 and the Belgorod Agricultural Institute was opened in 1978 (since 1994 the Belgorod State Agricultural Academy). From the 1980s, prefabricated buildings were built in the village . In 1986 Maiski received urban-type settlement status , but lost it again in 1994.

As part of the municipal reform in Russia, the administrative headquarters of the Belgorodski rajon, which had existed since 1928, was relocated from Belgorod to Maiski on January 1, 2006.

traffic

The federal highway M2 Crimea (part of European route 105 ) , which has been expanded to a four-lane expressway, runs through the village from Moscow via Tula , Oryol , Kursk and Belgorod to the Ukrainian border (from there in the direction of Kharkiv  - Zaporizhia  - Crimea ). The railway line Moscow - Kursk - Kharkiv passes northwest, but has no station there; the nearest the train station and the Belgorod are breakpoint Dolbino 5 km southwest of Maisky.

Maiski is part of the Belgorod city bus network. A trolleybus line leading from Belgorod to the settlement since 1986  - one of the longest in Russia - was temporarily suspended in 2014 due to the expansion of the M2, on which it operated in part, but has not yet been put into operation again (as of November 2017).
