Major Label is a record label from Jena and Leipzig . Both production, distribution and delivery are guaranteed by major labels and for some of the products by Broken Silence from Hamburg. Styles are indie , punk , new wave , electronics and, since the end of 2007, radio plays too .

history

The label was founded in 1998 by Andreas Ettler, the bass player from Verbrannte Erde and Robert Stieler in Berga / Elster . Before that, Robert Stieler was able to gain experience in the Matatu Records label he founded and bring it to the newly founded label. Lars Nagler has been an integral part of the label since 2007.

Inspired by renowned German independent labels such as Aggressive Rockproduktionen or Weird System , but musically much more inclined towards post-punk , Major Label should get a similarly distinctive sound profile over the years.

The sound of the first releases was still quite clearly in the dark post-punk . The first release in 1998 was State of Emergency's third studio tape on vinyl . Then in 1999 a CD was released by Serene Fall , a side project from EA 80 and in 2000 a Split 10 " with the two bands Strahler 80 from Austria and Unabomber from Hamburg, which were named after the pseudonym of the US bomb bomber Theodore Kaczynski . Some of the musicians from Unabomber are active in the band Turbostaat .

To date there have been around 80 releases on Major Label . The musical range extends now and increasingly clearly beyond the punk genre. In 2002, for example, the instrumental album Exit by the band Guts Pie Earshot was released, which was only recorded with the instruments cello , bass and drums . The debut album Häßlich and Neu by the group Kommando Sonne-nmilch around Brezel Göring by Stereo Total and Jens Rachut (Angeschissen, Dackelblut , Oma Hans , Blumen am Arsch der Hölle & Epidemic Prince) should be rated as a similar hybrid . The bizarre mixture of punk, radio play and minimal electronics was initially celebrated in the press as a “courageous commercial suicide”. The album is still one of the most successful label releases today.

The album Jamaica by Kommando Sonne-nmilch , published on Major Label and Buback , made it to number 3 in the editorial charts in the 2007 annual poll of the music magazine Spex . In 2007 a three-part radio play was published for the first time in collaboration with the Hamburg-based label Nobistor. Jens Rachut as the author is developing a grotesque alternative to the current doctrine of creation with some prominent speakers ( e.g. Laura Tonke ) and musicians (Jonas Landerschier from Jan Delay or Brezel Göring from Stereo Total ) . The radio drama trilogy ran in November 2007 to 1 Live of the WDR 3 .

The label sold its own publications until 2006. Since November 2006 there has been a supplementary deal with Broken Silence Independent Distribution GmbH from Hamburg.

Great Kamiokande Detector

In 2005 the operators of Major Label founded the sub-label Super Kamiokande Detector . So far, four recordings have been released here that, due to their musical orientation, could not be accommodated in Major Label's label catalog .

Partner labels

Although most of the records are self-released, there have been some successful collaborations with the following labels over the past 10 years:

Buback , Nobistor, SM Music, Rundling, Eastcore, Alerta Antifascista, Up-Art, Sacro K-Baalismo, Transit Records, Klabauter, Nix-Gut Records
