The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary is a Catholic parish church in Ommersheim , a district of the Mandelbachtal community . It is consecrated or dedicated to the story of the Marian life of the encounter with Elizabeth . In the list of monuments of the Saarland, the church is a single monument listed.

history

The predecessor building of today's church was a church from the 11th century, which was demolished in 1827 due to dilapidation and lack of space.

In 1829, according to plans by the royal Bavarian district construction engineer Paul Camille von Denis, the successor building was built in the late classicist style. In 1835, Camille von Denis was also responsible for planning the first German railway line with steam operation , the Bavarian Ludwig Railway , between Nuremberg and Fürth . At the time of completion, the church building was the largest in the whole of Bliesgau .

The church was badly damaged in fighting at the end of the Second World War on March 15, 1945, but could be rebuilt by the end of 1945.

In the following decades, the Ommersheim parish grew due to the population growth , so that the church became too small. As a result, a church building association was founded in 1966 with the aim of collecting funds for an extension of the church building. According to plans by the architect Emil Hery ( Homburg ), work began on April 10, 1967, on the modern hall-like extension, which was added to the east of the existing church. For the extension that now formed the nave , large parts of the east wall of the old church were removed. The nave of the former church was converted into a choir or altar room. As a result, the previous room character was changed significantly. On July 7, 1968, the new church was consecrated by the then Speyer bishop Friedrich Wetter .

Furnishing

Inside there are some art treasures, including the late Gothic sacramental niche from the 15th century from the previous church , a Baroque figure of St. Lawrence from 1740, a wooden crucifix from the 18th century and the gilded tabernacle from 1862, the one from the war destroyed high altar comes from. Also worth mentioning is a statue of the Madonna with a child , presumably from the 14th century .

In addition, the church houses other figures of saints from the 19th century, including z. B. a figure of St. Joseph and a statue of the Heart of the Virgin Mary . To the left of the main entrance, which is located in the modern extension, is a statue of Brother Konrad , which was created by the nationally important sculptor Karl Erich Riemann (Blieskastel, * 1889; † 1945). Also striking is the large figure of Mary with the baby Jesus on the left in front of the main altar, which was made as a copy of an original by Riemenschneider .

In the apse of the old church is one relating to purchased in 1930 baptismal font from Carrara - marble . In front of it is the former communion bench from 1894, which has a symbolic program of images.

The pictures of the Stations of the Cross, which hang on the side walls of the modern extension, are copies of a Stations of the Cross that the painter Joseph Ritter von Führich ( Vienna ) created in the style of the Nazarenes . The three wooden reliefs to the right of the main altar, which used to be attached to the pulpit of the old church, were made in the same style .

The church windows in the modern extension come from the artist Wilhelm-Alois Kurz (Neunkirchen). A Romanesque arched frieze from the previous church is on display in the entrance area of the extension , which was found in 2002 in a garden wall of an Ommersheim property.

The organ of the church dates from 1838. The single-manual instrument of the Stumm dynasty (4th generation) was installed in the organ case on October 10, 1838 , according to still preserved records . This makes the organ, after the one in the Protestant Church of Wolfersheim , the second oldest preserved in the Saarland and one of the oldest in the region. The authentic, late baroque oak casing and organ have survived almost unchanged due to early romantic influences . When the church was expanded, the organ was moved to the new gallery and was most recently thoroughly repaired in 2003. A sound document of the organ is available with the CD recording Un plaisir by Christian Brembeck . The disposition is as follows:
