The Catholic parish church of the Assumption of Mary in Klingen , a district of Aichach in the Bavarian administrative district of Swabia , was built around 1790 on the site of previous buildings from Romanesque and Gothic times. The classicist furnishings from the construction period have largely been preserved. The church is one of the protected architectural monuments in Bavaria.

history

In 1255, Klingen and its church became the property of the Teutonic Order . Around 1790, the former commander of the order, Karl Joseph Ludwig von Eptingen (1713–1794), had the old church torn down and a new church built under the direction of Friedberg's city architect Joseph Singer.

architecture

Exterior construction

In the northern corner of the choir is the square, five-storey bell tower crowned by an onion dome. The tower is structured by pilaster strips and blind areas, into which narrow, loopholes-like openings are cut on the three lower floors and cross-oval openings on the fourth floor. The bell storey, which rises above a pronounced, profiled cornice , is pierced on three sides by large, arched sound arcades . The clock faces of the tower clock are inserted in semicircular gables under the onion dome. Like the tower, the nave and choir are also divided by pilasters.

inner space

The interior, a hall structure structured by coupled pilasters , is vaulted by a flat needle cap barrel. A flat choir arch leads to the strongly drawn-in, five-sided closed choir. A double gallery resting on wooden pillars forms the western end of the nave .

Ceiling painting and frescoes

Gallery

The ceiling painting in the choir depicting the Annunciation probably dates from the 1870s and was installed in place of an older painting.

The frescoes , the ceiling fresco in the nave and the two frescoes on the gallery parapet, were made by the painter Johann Baptist Anwander , who came from Landsberg am Lech . The nave fresco is dedicated to the church's patronage , the Assumption of Mary .

On the upper fresco of the gallery, the dream of St. Joseph , you can see an angel waking Joseph so that he would flee to Egypt with Mary and the baby Jesus from the persecution of Herod . The scene is signed in the lower center with the signature “B. Anwander 1791 ”. The resurrection of Christ is shown in the picture below.

Above the choir arch, the painted coat of arms of Maximilian Franz of Austria , son of Empress Maria Theresa and Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, commemorates the patron saints of the time . Otherwise, the walls are white and the decor is limited to painted stucco imitations . The stitch caps that cut into the windows are covered with brocade painting .

Furnishing

The altars and the pulpit , which were created in 1793 and are attributed to Sebald Melchior Wiest from Schrobenhausen, have been preserved from the classicist furnishings of the church .

  • The four-column high altar shows the Marian monogram in its excerpt . The altar painting depicting the betrothal is attributed to Johann Baptist Anwander.
  • The altarpieces on the two side altars were made around 1860 by the Munich painter Michael Neher . The painting on the left altar shows Joseph with the baby Jesus and is a reminder of the Joseph Brotherhood founded in 1669 . The right altarpiece shows the archangel Raphael protecting the young Tobias .
  • The pulpit is crowned by a sound cover with two white putti and a vase. The dove of the Holy Spirit is attached to the bottom. Two white putti also decorate the pulpit. The back wall of the pulpit is decorated with a medallion and the bust of the Apostle Paul .
  • A crucifixion group hangs on the south side, opposite the pulpit . The crucifix was made in the first half of the 18th century, the assistant figures Maria and Johannes are dated around 1500.
  • In the choir is a baptismal font from 1827 with the group of figures depicting the baptism of Jesus .
