Maria Maier (* 1954 in Amberg ) is a German artist . Her work includes drawing , graphics , painting , photography , public art, and conceptual art .

life and work

From 1975 to 1979 Maier studied art education and art history at the University of Regensburg . After several years of teaching, she has been working as a freelance artist since 1992. Maier lives and works in Köfering and Regensburg . She has received awards in the form of international grants and art-in-building competitions.

Maria Maier's art is largely determined by drawing and the principle of collage. In spite of all the expansions that her way of working and her formal vocabulary have undergone over the years, linear elements always remain decisive. This also applies to her paintings on canvas and her collages. Since 2000 Maria Maier has been working increasingly with the combination of photography and painting. She combines photographic motifs with painted or drawn image fields. Sometimes these combinations are photographed again and painted over again. This leads to complex superimpositions of the image structures.

Maria Maier finds a large part of her photographic material on study trips and during her work stays in different places around the world. In addition to European countries, she also traveled to Burma, India, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Syria, Thailand, Turkey, Vietnam, USA, Honduras, Belize, Cuba, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia.

The most important motifs of her work with photography are architectural elements, found objects in urban space and always deserted urban situations. During a working scholarship at the Tyrone Guthrie Center in Ireland in 2011, she dealt extensively with nature motifs, the colors and shapes of flowers and leaves.

The focus of Maria Maier's work is dealing with the phenomenon of time. This is indicated by catalog and exhibition titles such as “Poetry of Time”, “Zwischenzeit”, “Zeit-Symbiosen” and “ORTsZEIT”. Temporal aspects such as the emergence and disappearance of forms and structures as well as the different time dimensions of photographic and painterly image processes condense into artistic meditations on the concept of time. The decisive trigger for this thematic intensification was again the trips. "As the thematic aspect of 'time' gained a global meaning, pairs of terms such as proximity and distance, home and foreign (etc.) lost their actually opposing meaning."

In addition to her studio art, Maria Maier has also realized art-on-building projects and works in public spaces. For the conceptual project “Stadtzeit-Zeitstadt, Project Regensburg” from 1995, consisting of a graphic edition and an installation, she installed a total of 76 art panels on historical buildings throughout Regensburg's old town.

In 2012 she won the art competition for the redesign of Bahnhofstrasse in Schwandorf with her project “Farbwegweiser” and in 2013 with her project “Our district - 41 municipalities under one roof” she won the competition for the expansion and renovation of the Regensburg district office (realization 2014/2015).

Quotes

“The Regensburg artist Maria Maier crosses the border between different artistic means of expression. She combines painting, drawing, collage and photography into a single picture. It's about rest and movement, time and space. Associative processes condense into an aesthetic whole. The artist has dedicated herself to the photographic search for traces. The photographic material collected in foreign landscapes and cities becomes a multi-layered album of memories and optical further-thinking in a serial way at home in the studio. "" In order to translate the real spatial relationships recorded in photography into artistic ones, a combination with painted or collaged elements. 'Collage' in the broadest sense of the word, ie the combination of image materials from different origins, is a principle that Maria Maier has applied in almost all of her work in recent years. The juxtaposition and superimposition of photography and painting or drawing results in a sometimes confusing interlocking of different temporal and spatial orders "
