Maria Weiss (* in Carinthia ) is an Austrian actress and opera singer ( mezzo-soprano ) with a focus on baroque music , early music and Spanish song.

Career

Weiss began her musical training at the age of five and soon discovered her preference for music before 1750. From the age of thirteen she sang in various vocal ensembles and made her first solo appearances with works by Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach .

She studied at the Sorbonne in Paris , where she graduated after a semester in cultural history (Diplôme de langue et civilization françaises). This was followed by vocal studies at the Conservatorio di Musica Luigi Cherubini in Florence , which she completed in 2003 at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz . Her singing teacher there was the Austrian chamber singer Joanna Borowska-Isser , formerly a member of the Vienna State Opera .

She completed an acting degree at the Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute in New York , continued her vocal training with Jorge Sirena in Barcelona and attended master classes and coaching with well-known artists such as Teresa Berganza , Angelika Kirchschlager and Glenys Linos . She has received numerous grants and awards from renowned institutions such as the Teatro Real in Madrid , Saint Louis University and the University of Santiago de Compostela , which enabled her to develop an extensive repertoire. Weiss has specialized in Latin American and Spanish song under the guidance of Teresa Berganza and Isabel Aragón and has vocal works by Manuel de Falla , Enrique Granados , Jesus Guridi , Jaime León , Xavier Montsalvatge , Joaquín Rodrigo , and Heitor Villa-Lobos in her repertoire.

Engagements led Maria Weiss to various festivals at home and abroad, such as the Wiener Festwochen , the Festival Trigonale - Festival of Early Music, the Feldkirch Festival , the Donaufestwochen im Strudengau, the Graz Chamber Opera or the "BOV Opera Festival" at the Teatru Manoel in Valletta ( Malta ) and she performed at the Vienna Konzerthaus , the Graz Opera House , the Bregenz Festival Hall , the Dornbirn Culture House , the Klagenfurt Concert Hall and the Ateneu Barcelonès in Spain.

Maria Weiss is the founder and director of the project “ favola in musica. old new music ”, for which Wolfgang Mitterer composed two commissioned works. Weiss speaks several languages ​​and lives in Carinthia and Vienna.
