Mario Roberto Cassari (born August 27, 1943 in Ghilarza , Oristano province , † August 19, 2017 in Oristano ) was an Italian clergyman , Roman Catholic archbishop and diplomat of the Holy See .

Life

Mario Roberto Cassari was ordained a priest on December 27, 1969 at the age of 26 . This was followed by postgraduate studies at the University of Sassari and at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome , where he was awarded a Dr. theol. doctorate was and where he also the licentiate in canon law earned. From 1974 to 1977 he was a student at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy , he with the ecclesial diplomacy diploma graduated.

He then entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on March 22, 1977 and worked in various functions in papal representations in Pakistan , Colombia , Ecuador , Sudan , South Africa , Japan , Austria , Lithuania , Yugoslavia and Bosnia-Herzegovina . Pope Paul VI bestowed on him on April 7, 1978 the honorary title of chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ) and Pope John Paul II on November 26, 1992 the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness .

On August 3, 1999, Pope John Paul II appointed him Titular Archbishop of Truentum and Apostolic Nuncio in the Republic of the Congo and Gabon . He was ordained bishop by Cardinal Secretary of State Angelo Sodano on October 16, 1999. Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Oristano , Pier Giuliano Tiddia , and the Bishop of Tempio-Ampurias , Paolo Atzei OFMConv .

From July 31, 2004 Cassari represented the Holy See in the Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso and from September 8, 2004 also in Niger . On June 12, 2007, he resigned from his activities in Burkina Faso and Niger. Since February 14, 2008, Mario Roberto Cassari has been Apostolic Nuncio in Croatia .

On March 10, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . as the Apostolic Nuncio in South Africa , Botswana , Lesotho , Namibia and Swaziland . Pope Francis appointed him Apostolic Nuncio in Malta on May 21, 2015 .

In December 2016, Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation.
