Max Emanuel Ludwig Maria Herzog in Bavaria (born January 21, 1937 in Munich , maiden name Max Emanuel Ludwig Maria Prince of Bavaria ) is a German entrepreneur and family member of the Wittelsbach family , the former ruling family of the Kingdom of Bavaria .

Life

The former Tegernsee monastery with basilica

Max Emanuel is the second and youngest son of Albrecht von Bayern (1905–1996) and his first wife, Countess Maria Drašković von Trakošćan (1904–1969). He is a great-grandson of the last Bavarian King Ludwig III. Together with his sisters, the twins Marie Gabriele and Marie Charlotte (* 1931), and his brother Franz (* 1933), he grew up in Munich, Croatia and Hungary . In October 1944, his father was arrested by the Gestapo and together with his family in the Sachsenhausen , Flossenbürg and Dachau concentration camps held captive. After the war he attended the Humanist High School in Ettal and, like his older brother, studied business administration at the universities of Munich and Zurich . In Switzerland he completed an apprenticeship in banking before he worked in the administration of the Hofkammer and Wittelsbach Compensation Fund (WAF) of the Wittelsbach family. Max Emanuel is a member of the board of trustees of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and the state advisory board of the Malteser Aid Service. Together with Catherine Demeter , Max Emanuel is a board member of the Edith Haberland Wagner Foundation . He and his family live in Tegernsee Castle and Wildenwart Castle .

On March 18, 1965, Max Emanuel Prince of Bavaria was adopted by his great-uncle Ludwig Wilhelm Herzog in Bavaria (1884-1968), who had no descendants from his marriage to Eleonore zu Sayn-Wittgenstein -Berleburg, to maintain the line of dukes in Bavaria . Since then, Max Emanuel, like his adoptive father, has borne the family name Herzog in Bavaria. He took over the ducal property in Tegernsee, including the former monastery with the Tegernsee brewery , the Wildbad Kreuth and the land of the former Banz monastery .

Since Max Emanuel's older brother, the current head of the House of Wittelsbach, Franz Duke of Bavaria, is childless, and he has no male descendants himself, the successor goes to Prince Luitpold of Bavaria , the grandson of the third son of King Ludwig III. ; then on his first-born son Ludwig Heinrich Prince of Bavaria . House Legally equal marriage is Luitpold pursuant to a deed since 3 March 1999th

Succession to the throne of the Jacobites

Max Emanuel is a descendant of the sister of the Scottish and English King James II Stuart with his second wife and Catholic Maria Beatrice d'Este . He is therefore regarded by the Jacobites as the successor to the British throne after the death of his brother Franz and would be referred to by them as Max I, King of England , Scotland , Ireland and France . The Jacobites call him the Duke of Albany . The position of heir to the House of Stuart will fall to his eldest daughter, Hereditary Princess Sophie von und zu Liechtenstein .

Marriage and offspring

On January 24, 1967, Max Emanuel Prince of Bavaria married Elizabeth Christina Countess Douglas (born December 31, 1940 in Stockholm ) in Wildbad Kreuth , daughter of Count Carl Ludwig Douglas and Ottora Haas-Heye and sister of the Swedish industrialist Count Gustaf Douglas . Five daughters were born from their marriage:
