Mi plan ( Spanish for Mein Plan ) is the fourth studio album by the Portuguese - Canadian pop singer Nelly Furtado and her first Spanish - speaking one . It was published on September 11, 2009 in Germany , Austria and Switzerland , and on September 15 in the United States .

Emergence

In an interview with Etalk TV on October 17, 2008, Nelly Furtado said that she was working on new albums. One of them is in Spanish and the other in Portuguese . She confirmed this again on her MySpace page on March 4, 2009 after a song called Gotta Know that was supposed to be by Furtado appeared on the Internet; But this turned out to be a mistake, because in October 2008 Nelly Furtado had already started work on their fourth studio album with James Bryan, a long-time friend and guitarist of the Philosopher Kings , and Alex Cuba, a Cuban-Canadian singer and songwriter. Furtado said she could not record songs in English because she lacked the inspiration. “After ten years of recording songs in English, I hit a wall. I felt that was the moment to make the dream come true. ”She also said that she had always loved singing in Spanish and Portuguese. You can use it to express a lot better than in English, so that the songs have become more intimate and personal. “I think the album contains my first real love songs. You are not complicated. They are not too intellectual, and I found it liberating to sing in the Latin American language and express myself through my Latin American soul. "She also explained her blockage from being able to write in English:" I was physically tired and felt doesn't really inspire me. It was almost like I had lost my inspiration to write in English. I just needed a new approach and I found that in writing Spanish texts. "

Nelly Furtado had almost finished the album and played the individual pieces for her then five-year-old daughter Nevis. She found many of the tracks on the album to be too slow, so Furtado recorded a few up-tempo songs. Furtado justified her daughter's behavior and criticism by saying that she was already very musical.

The themes that the songs on Mi plan deal with are primarily love and everyday life. For the album Nelly Furtado got support from many artists from the field of Latin Pop . The artists represented on Mi plan are Julieta Venegas , La Mala Rodríguez , Concha Buika , Juan Luis Guerra , Josh Groban , Alejandro Fernández and Alex Cuba. Furtado wanted to give the album a unique touch in this way.

After the first single Manos al aire was first released on the radio on June 29, 2009 and then as a CD on July 31, the album was released on September 11 in Germany , Austria and Switzerland . There was also a countdown called Countdown to Mi plan on iTunes , in which the three singles Más , Mi plan (feat. Alex Cuba) and Bajo otra luz (feat. Julieta Venegas & La Mala Rodríguez ) were exclusively released as promo singles.

Singles

The first single from Mi plan was Manos al aire (Spanish for 'hands in the air'). From June 29th it was played on the radio and from July 31st it was available as a single. The song is a love song and is about giving up. As a couple, you often quarrel over disagreements. In the verses, Furtado accuses her partner of his mistakes and she wants to express what she does not like about the relationship. In the chorus of the song she gives up and surrenders in the face of love by putting her hands in the air. She wants her love to last.

The music video was shot in Toronto . It shows Nelly Furtado on the one hand fighting with her partner and on the other hand driving through the streets in an army jeep. Furtado throws things out of the vehicle, finally gets out and then takes off her army clothes. In the end, the two make up again. On her homepage, Furtado explains that two people can master disputes because they love each other. That is the leitmotif of the song. Driving around in the jeep and taking off her clothes should show the viewer that she is slowly loosing herself and giving up everything for love. The army outfit is the symbol of a person who gives up and set aside their own, selfish claims in the relationship.

In Germany, the single entered the single charts at number 2, and topped the download and airplay charts for one week each. It reached number 6 in Switzerland and 5th in Austria. Although the single did not make it into the Billboard Hot 100 , it reached the top position in the Hot Latin Tracks . With this, Furtado set a record as she was the first North American woman to make it to the top with an original Spanish-language single.

Más (Spanish for 'more') was released as the first promo single for Countdown to Mi plan on July 21, 2009. Más addresses the imbalance in a relationship because one gives more than the other. Más was released as a download single on December 18, 2009 . In addition to the single itself, it also includes live versions of their songs Broken Strings , Bajo otra luz , Más , Say It Right , I'm Like a Bird and Manos al aire , which they performed at an acoustic concert in Freiburg on October 3rd 2009 had played.

The music video for Más is about Furtado being cheated on by her boyfriend. He doesn't look at her properly and comes home late. She finds out he's cheating on her when she takes a look at his laptop . She then surprises her boyfriend and his affair and lets her anger and disappointment run free. In the video, the friend is played by the same man who played Furtado's friend in the video for Manos al aire . In addition, the relationship counselor from the video previously played the friend's affair.

Furtado Mi plan (Spanish for 'Mein Plan') sings with Alex Cuba . The single was the second promo single of Countdown on iTunes and was released on August 11, 2009. The song deals with the fact that being in love and happy is enough when everything else is not so clear.

Sueños (Spanish for 'dreams') is a collaboration with the Mexican singer Alejandro Fernández . The song was recorded at the Hit Factory in Miami .

Bajo otra luz (Spanish for 'under a different light') is the only song whose lyrics Nelly Furtado was not involved in, as it was written by the Mexican singer and songwriter Julieta Venegas in collaboration with the Spanish hip-hop singer and rapper La Mala Rodríguez was written. The song was released on September 1, 2009 as part of the Countdown to Mi plan and was also recorded in Miami . Furtado was delighted with this collaboration, as were Venegas and Rodríguez.

In May 2010 it was announced that Bajo otra luz would be released as the third single. Due to Julieta Venegas' pregnancy, a new version of the song was recorded and she will not be shown in the video. Celia Palli recorded background vocals for the song and the official name of the song is now Nelly Furtado feat. Mala Rodríguez .

The video for Bajo otra luz was released on July 1, 2010. It shows Furtado and Rodríguez many costumes , while through the neighborhood Little Italy in Toronto run.

Furtado sings the title Vacación (Spanish for 'vacation') alone again. Julieta Venegas was also involved in this .

Suficiente tiempo (Spanish for 'Enough Time') is the seventh track on the album and was written by Furtado and Cuba.

For the song Fuerte (Spanish for 'strong') Furtado got support from the Spanish singer Concha Buika . On February 1, 2010, Furtado announced on Twitter that a video had been shot on Fuerte and that it would be published soon. Fuerte was able to reach number 3 in the US Billboard Hot Dance Music / Club Play charts without any promotion . The video didn't appear until October 22, 2010.

Silencio (Spanish for 'silence') features the classic US tenor singer Josh Groban .

The singer, composer and guitarist Juan Luis Guerra from the Dominican Republic is the guest on Como lluvia (Spanish for 'like rain').

Feliz cumpleaños (Spanish for 'Happy Birthday') was written by Furtado, Bryan and Cuba.

The last song on Mi plan , Fantasmas (Spanish for 'ghosts'), is a hidden track .
