Mikaela Tommy (born May 10, 1995 Ottawa , Ontario ) is a Canadian ski racer . The multiple World Cup participant starts in all disciplines, with her strengths being giant slalom and super-G .

biography

Mikaela Tommy comes from Wakefield , Québec , and starts for the Edelweiss Ski Club. Father Michael "Mike" Tommy (* 1963) took part in the Olympic slalom in 1984 and 1988 respectively . Her mother was also part of the Canadian youth squad when she was a teenager. She is studying environmental design at the University of Colorado .

Youth and Nor-Am Cup

At 15, Tommy competed in her first FIS races at home . After making her debut in the Nor-Am Cup in December 2011 , she took part in the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck the following January , where she achieved eleventh place in the Super-G as the best result. She finished the Junior World Championship in Roccaraso with a 31st place in the giant slalom. On February 4, 2013, she won a Nor-Am race for the first time with the giant slalom in Vail and secured the discipline classification at the end of the season. In her second JWM participation in her native Québec , she won her only medal with bronze in the team competition . Her most successful season to date, 2014/15 , she finished in second place overall after two wins. At the Canadian championships she finished second in the Super-G in February. In March 2015 she was clearly in the lead at the Junior World Championships in Hafjell after the first giant slalom round, but fell back in the decision to fourth and ultimately missed the bronze medal by 0.07 seconds. In her fifth and last JWM participation in Sochi , she did not get past 25th place in the giant slalom.

World Cup and World Cup participation

She made her World Cup debut at the age of 17 on January 26, 2013 in the giant slalom in Maribor . After the first Nor-Am victory, she was nominated by the Canadian Association for the World Championship in Schladming , where she was eliminated in the first round of the giant slalom. Although she couldn't convince in the World Cup, she was also allowed to take part in the World Championships in Vail / Beaver Creek , where she finished 22nd in her favorite discipline. Two years later, she competed in several races for the first time in St. Moritz . After a 22nd place in the Super-G, she was eliminated in combination, giant slalom and slalom in the second round. It wasn't until a good four years after her World Cup debut in March 2017 that she was able to win points for the first time in her 32nd race with rank 27 in the giant slalom in Squaw Valley . She narrowly failed to qualify for the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang . After five winters in the Canadian team, she largely decoupled from the national team for the 2018/19 season and trained with the university team. As a result, she managed an increase in the World Cup and she reached the ranks 26 in Killington , 19 in Courchevel and 18 at Semmering . In the World Cup giant slalom in Åre , she did not get past 26th place, but attracted attention with a Valentine's Day appeal directed into the TV camera .
