Michael "Mike" Komisarek (born January 19, 1982 in West Islip , Long Island , New York ) is a former American ice hockey player and current coach of Polish descent. During his playing career, the defender played over 500 games for the Canadiens de Montréal , Toronto Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League . He has been part of the Buffalo Sabers coaching team since July 2017 .
Career
Komisarek's father, Roman, emigrated from Poland to the United States at the age of 24, where he first ran a car repair shop on Long Island and later brought his wife to catch up. Son Mike, who was born in the United States, played in various junior leagues before he was accepted into the support program of the US ice hockey association USA Hockey . During his college years , the 1.93 m tall defender played for the University of Michigan in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association , a league in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association .
In the 2001 NHL Entry Draft , Komisarek was finally selected as seventh in the first round by the Canadiens de Montréal . Initially, the right-handed shooter commuted between the Canadiens and their farm team , the Hamilton Bulldogs from the American Hockey League , after the lockout in the 2004/05 season , Komisarek finally made the leap into the regular squad of the Montréal Canadiens. There, the American was very popular with the fans due to his physique and team-friendly play, so he led the league in the 2007/08 season in the number of blocked shots (227) and drove the second-most checks within this season. In the previous season he succeeded in March 2006 against the Washington Capitals his first goal in 123 NHL games to date. In 2009 Komisarek took part in the All-Star Game for the Eastern Conference team.
For the 2009/10 season , the right-handed player moved within the league to the Toronto Maple Leafs , where he received a five-year contract with a rumored annual salary of an average of 4.5 million US dollars. In January 2010 Komisarek suffered a shoulder injury in the game against the Calgary Flames , which meant the end of the season for him and thus prevented his participation in the Winter Olympics in Vancouver , for which he had recently been nominated for the US national team . After poor performance and unfulfilled expectations, the defensive player spent a large part of the 2012/13 season in the stands in Toronto and was sent to the AHL in March 2013 at his own request for the benefit of match practice to the Toronto Marlies farm team . In July 2013, his contract was early paid off by the Toronto Maple Leafs ( buy out ). A few days later, Komisarek signed a one-year contract with the Carolina Hurricanes , which was not renewed after the 2013-14 season .
In September 2014, the defender was engaged for a short time as part of a trial contract ( try-out ) with the New Jersey Devils , which, however, decided against a firm commitment. Komisarek then announced that, due to a lack of offers from the NHL, he was ending his active career and resuming his studies at the University of Michigan, where he continued to coach the university's ice hockey team as an assistant coach from January 2015. He held the latter position until the end of the 2015/16 season.
For the 2017/18 season Komisarek was signed by the Buffalo Sabers and is now responsible for player development there (player development coach) .
