Mooswald is a district in the west of Freiburg im Breisgau , which consists of the two districts Mooswald-West (521) and Mooswald-East (522). It borders in the northeast on the Brühl district with the airfield, the university campus of the Technical Faculty and the exhibition grounds, in the northwest on Landwasser , in the southwest on Betzenhausen with the Seepark and in the east on the Stühlinger district . Towards Brühl the district is separated by the Freiburg – Colmar railway line , against Landwasser by Westrandstrasse (Paduaallee / Mooswaldallee) and against Stühlinger by the Freiburg freight bypass .

history

In 1932, the city council of Freiburg decided to build a suburban settlement on what was then the western edge of the city, on Mooswald, after the Reich government had decided on an unemployment program in 1931 in times of high unemployment. Most of the houses were built by the settlers' mutual work and could then be bought by heritable building . After 1933 the project was continued as a National Socialist settlement project. In 1934 a settlers' union was founded. At the beginning (until the end of the 1930s) the simple houses had neither electricity nor gas nor a connection to the sewage system. The water supply was initially provided by pump wells on the property. Large gardens enabled extensive self-sufficiency with potatoes and vegetables and also allowed small animals to be raised. In 1938 the Holy Family Catholic Church was built in this area. During the air raid on Freiburg in November 1944 , 80% of the district was destroyed.

As early as 1945, active reconstruction work began with the simplest of means. In 1948, a stop at Im Wolfswinkel was set up on the railway line to Breisach (which has since been canceled). In 1952, today's Mooswald eV community was founded. The city of Freiburg set up a garbage dump in nearby Wolfswinkel . In 1953 the Evangelical St. Mark's Church was built as an emergency church. With the Mooswaldschule, the district received an elementary school in 1955/56, and a community house was also completed.

After the end of the Second World War , a constant theme for the residents of Mooswald was the preservation of the moss forest to the west, which was increasingly affected by the expansion of the city to the west.

Buildings and facilities

St. Mark's Church

There are two churches in the district, the Holy Family (Catholic) and the Markuskirche (Protestant). The Jewish cemetery of Freiburg is also located here . Schools in the district are the Paul Hindemith elementary school , the Wentzinger schools ( secondary school and grammar school ) and the Mooswald school, which is now a school for educational assistance.

A meeting place for young and old is the Fritz-Hüttinger-Haus , managed by the Mooswald Citizens' Association , whose premises are used for cultural events, language courses or as a meeting place for young people.

The western moss forests and the Seepark in the south-west in the Betzenhausen district offer recreational opportunities .

The Breisacher Hof is a residential area in upheaval in the former Gallwitz barracks. At the beginning of 2017, the city announced that the football field there should be built with 60 socially subsidized rental apartments by 2020. In 2013 the west arcades were completed. Further residential areas are under construction.

A Deutsche Telekom radio tower on Paduaallee is quite striking.

traffic

For the tram line 4 to the fair in 2013, construction began. Its first section up to the provisional terminus of the Faculty of Technology was put into operation on December 11, 2015. In 2020, the last kilometer to the fair should be finished. The Breisgau-S-Bahn Freiburg– Breisach serves the district with the stop Neue Messe / Universität . The main thoroughfare is Elsässerstraße, on which bus lines 10 and 36 of the Freiburger Verkehrs AG (VAG) and line 7212 of the SBG also run. Four-lane streets in the west (Paduaallee) and in the east (Berliner Allee) make the district easily accessible for motor vehicles.
