history
On November 6, 1780, the area was granted under the name Caldersburgh to Jedediah Calderkin and 63 others. The name was changed to Morgan on October 19, 1801 . The name change was in honor of John Morgan, back from Hartford , Connecticut, one of the original owners of the grant from which many of the early settlers bought their land. The area was surveyed by General Whitelaw and he named Lake Seymour after Israel Seymour, another owner of the town's grant. The first settler was Nathan Wilcox in 1802. In March 1807 the constituent assembly of the town took place.
During the 1960s, the Vermont State Legislature passed bill requiring all dairy farms to install refrigeration systems for storing milk produced daily. Since the small farms could not afford this, many sold their land and the population shrank dramatically. Tourism on Lake Seymour has created another economic pillar alongside agriculture.
