Morten Pedersen Porsild (born September 1, 1872 in Glibstrup near Store Andst , † April 30, 1956 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish botanist, known for contributions to the flora of Greenland . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Porsild ".

Live and act

Porsild attended the Cathedral School in Roskilde and studied at the University of Copenhagen with a master's degree in 1900. He first took part in expeditions to Greenland in 1898 and 1902 (with the physiologist August Krogh ) and in 1906 founded the Arktisk Station research station in Qeqertarsuaq in western Greenland ( Diskoinsel ), which he headed for 40 years and which was taken over by the University of Copenhagen after his death in 1956. He was supported by important polar researchers such as Knud Rasmussen , Fridtjof Nansen and Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen and by the Danish state. In 1946 he returned to Copenhagen. His station was then directed by Paul Gelting.

In addition to botany, he also dealt with zoology and ethnology on Greenland. From 1927 to 1938 he was in Grønlands Landsråd for two periods . He lectured in Cambridge and at American universities.

In 1897 he married Johanne Kirstine Nielsen (1870–1940). He is the father of the Danish-Canadian botanist Alf Erling Porsild (1901–1977), who was a curator at the National Museum in Ottawa . His son-in-law was the Provincial Councilor Peter Egede (1908–1996) and his grandson was the psychologist, human rights activist and rector Ingmar Egede (1930–2003).

He was a corresponding member of the American Geographical Society , a Fellow of the Arctic Institute of North America, and a Knight of the Order of Danebro .

Honors

The plant genus Porsildia Á.Löve & D.Löve from the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae) is named after him.
