NGC 2340 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E3 in the constellation Lynx at the northern sky . It is estimated to be 273 million light years from the Milky Way and about 140,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 2334 , IC 460 , IC 463 , IC 464 .
The object was discovered by William Herschel on February 9, 1788 .
