NGC 2362 is a Trumpler-Type I3p Open Cluster in the constellation Great Dog south of the celestial equator . Its brightest star is Tau Canis Majoris , which is why it is sometimes referred to as the Tau Canis Majoris Cluster . It has an angular extent of 6 '× 6' and an apparent magnitude of 3.8 mag. The cluster is about 5000 light years away from the solar system, its age is estimated to be 4–5 million years.
The object was discovered by Giovanni Battista Hodierna before 1654 . Rediscovered on March 4th, 1783 by William Herschel .
