Messier 47 (also referred to as NGC 2422 = NGC 2478 ) is a 4.4 mag bright open star cluster with an angular extent of 30 'in the constellation Puppis . The cluster is approximately 1,600 light years away, and its 50 stars span an area of approximately 10 light years. M47 is around 80 million years old.
