NGC 5474 is a spiral-shaped dwarf galaxy of type Sc in the constellation Ursa Major and 17 million light-years from the Milky Way center. NGC 5474 belongs to the Messier 101 group , a galaxy group whose best-known member is the eponymous galaxy Messier 101 . The proximity of this object strongly distorted the appearance of NGC 5474 due to its gravitational forces .

It was discovered by William Herschel on May 1, 1788 .
