NGC 5497 is a 14.1 mag bright bar spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Bear Guardian in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 347 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 120,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky is the galaxy NGC 5515 .
The object was discovered on May 11, 1882 by Édouard Stephan .
