NGC 5495 is a 12.8 mag bright bar -spiral Seyfert galaxy (type 2) of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Water Snake and about 296 million light years from the Milky Way.
It was discovered on May 13, 1834 by John Herschel with an 18-inch reflector telescope, who noted "vF, S, R, bM, Np a star".
