NGC 5516 is a 12.0 mag bright elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E-S0 in the constellation Centaur and about 178 million light years from the Milky Way.
It was discovered on July 1, 1834 by John Herschel with an 18-inch reflector telescope, who made two observations: “F, S, R, near 2 stars 12th; a small double star follows 5 ′ "and" pB, S, R, psbM, 15 arcseconds "noted.
