NGC 5509 is a 14.1 mag bright, lens-shaped galaxy of the Hubble-type S0 in the constellation Bear Guardian in the northern sky . It is an estimated 384 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 125,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky there are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5492 , NGC 5513 , NGC 5518 .
The object was discovered on June 10, 1887 by Guillaume Bigourdan .
