NGC 5478 is a bar-spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble-type SAB (s) bc in the constellation Virgo . It is estimated to be 335 million light years from the Milky Way and about 110,000 light years in diameter.
The object was discovered on March 23, 1789 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
