Honored three times as best director: the American Martin Scorsese

Winner of the National Society of Film Critics in the category Best Director (Best Director) . The awards are presented every year at the beginning of January for the best film productions and filmmakers of the past calendar year. In 1975 and 1977 there were two awards ceremonies in January and December, after which the National Society of Film Critics Award in 1976 and 1978 was not awarded.

The most successful in this category were the Swedish film director Ingmar Bergman and his American colleague Martin Scorsese , who each won the award three times. The film critics association succeeded in presenting the Oscar winner nine times , most recently in 2019, when the Mexican Alfonso Cuarón ( Roma ) prevailed. In 2010, 2018 and 2019, women prevailed with Kathryn Bigelow ( Tödliches Kommando - The Hurt Locker ) and Greta Gerwig ( Lady Bird / Little Women ). In 2013, Austria's Michael Haneke ( Liebe ) was the first director from German-speaking countries to prevail.

At the last award ceremony in 2020, Greta Gerwig ( Little Women ) prevailed with three points over Bong Joon-ho ( Parasite , 36 points) and Martin Scorsese ( The Irishman , 31 points).
