history
Founded in the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria , the university belonged to Austria for 134 years. The outcome of the First World War brought her to the West Ukrainian People's Republic in 1918 , to which she was lost in the Polish-Ukrainian War . After 21 years in the Second Polish Republic , it came under the Soviet occupation of Eastern Poland in 1939 and under German occupation in the General Government in 1941 . From 1945 it was subject to the Soviet Union and when it was dissolved it came to Ukraine in 1991.
The university is named after Daniel Romanowitsch of Galicia . Its history goes back to 1661; however, a medical faculty was not formed until 1773. In 1784 the university had four faculties : theology , law , philosophy and medicine . Between 1891 and 1898, pathology , chemistry , gynecology and obstetrics were added (in 1897/98 AI Mars organized the first clinic for women's diseases there), surgery , internal medicine , dermatology , ENT medicine and others. After the Soviet occupation of eastern Poland , western Ukraine was incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1939 . The Medical Faculty was spun off from Lviv University and reorganized as the Lviv Medical Institute with two faculties. Since then, the university has existed as an independent medical university.
Today the university has 75 departments (including 47 clinical and 19 higher education institutions of Ukraine ), 14 buildings, a dental center, a botanical garden, a laboratory of the research center for the testing of new cancer drugs, a research library, 4 museums and 35 amateur groups.
