Söderåsen is a Swedish national park in the historic province of Skåne in what is now Skåne County . The national park is located around 30 km from the city of Helsingborg in the hilly landscape of the same name. The national park is the 27th national park in the country. Founded in 2001, it is one of the youngest national parks in Sweden.

geography

The park has a size of 1,625 ha and extends over the municipalities of Klippan and Svalöv . The landscape is characterized by plateaus and valleys up to 90 meters deep . From the highest point of the park, Kopparhatten, one overlooks the deepest crevice valley, Skäralid. Geologically, the ridge that makes up the park is an eyrie . This was created by an uplift period around 70–80 million years ago. The predominant type of rock is granite .

nature

The area is dominated by deciduous forests , mainly beeches on the plateaus , and birches , oaks , mountain ash and linden trees on the slopes of the valleys . Due to the rugged, inaccessible landscape, some of the forests were able to retain their primeval character . Due to the many dead trees ( dead wood ) there is a rich occurrence of insects with many rare beetles . One example is the Anoplodera scutellata, a member of the narrow-goat family . A wide variety of bird species also benefit from these populations. One of the most noteworthy flowering plants is the Akeleiblättrige meadow rue , which reaches one of its northernmost distribution areas in the park area.

history

In the area of the national park one can find traces of early human use of the area, such as field boundaries and stone walls. Some of these probably come from the Bronze and Iron Ages . Maps from the 17th century show that the entire ridge was covered with beech forest. Due to the use as pastures for cattle, goats and pigs, however, an almost open forest-free landscape developed in the 19th century, especially in the valleys. Only the forests on the steep slopes were able to survive this most intensive period of use almost unaffected.
The area was already known to be scenic in the 18th and 19th centuries and became more accessible to visitors with the construction of a railway at the end of the 19th century. With the protection in 2001 the aim is to preserve the southern Swedish eyrie landscape with its unique vegetation as well as valuable nature and culture.

tourism

The main entrance to the park is in Skäralid, where an exhibition in the Naturum reports on the natural and cultural history of the area. The park offers several hiking trails that can be used to access the area. The right of public access is restricted in the park area, making a fire and camping is only possible at the marked areas. Furthermore, 2 free overnight huts offer sleeping accommodations. Fishing is only permitted with a fishing license and only in Lake Odensjön.
