history

Navis is first documented in 1177 as "Nauisse" in a certificate of ownership from Pope Alexander III. named for the Benedictine monastery Biburg .

The origin of "Navis" is controversial, but probably has Latin roots. Coins found in the front part of the village even revealed the presence of Romans. The Navistal served as a pasture and alpine pasture for a long time and was not permanently settled until the 13th century. One of the most successful church architects in Tyrol - Franz de Paula Penz (1707–1772) was born as a farmer's son in Navis. In addition, the little church of St. Katharina with the Aufenstein castle ruins at the entrance to the valley is known for its old frescoes .

The unofficial nickname of the village "Valley of Love" came about when many Innsbruck residents plagued by plague were taken in on their flight into the valley.
