action

Josie Geller is a 25-year-old journalist who works for the Chicago Sun-Times . She is assigned to return to high school disguised as a student and undercover to write a report about the teenagers. Her brother Robert, who works in a cheap store, objects that she was unpopular in high school and was cursed as disgusting Josie (originally: Josie-Grossie ).

The return turns out to be problematic at first. Her brother Robert joins them, quickly becomes popular and helps his sister. Josie makes some friends, including Aldys Martin, who is known as a nerd. She falls in love with the school's literature teacher, Sam Coulson.

The publisher of the newspaper wants to read a sensational story and threatens to fire Geller, as well as her direct superior. Josie is equipped with a miniature camera; numerous newspaper employees gather in front of the monitor.

At the prom , Josie is named prom queen. She protects her friend Aldys from a bad joke, after which she reveals her and her brother's cover. Robert is pissed off because he was supposed to play a school team baseball game two days later . He tells her that nothing makes him happy like playing baseball and teaching others.

As planned, Josie writes the report; At the end of the article, however, asks the literature teacher, without giving his name, to appear at the game and give her the first real kiss of her life. At first it seems as if the teacher won't show up, but then he comes and kisses Josie in front of thousands of spectators.

After all, Robert is allowed to help the coach during the game. He owes this to the commitment of Josie, who promised the coach that respected sports reporters would attend the game.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on April 9, 1999 that the script was not overly original, but that Drew Barrymore filled it with her sunny manner and created a lovable character. The daily life of a newspaper is not shown realistically and Unkissed is not profound, but the film is funny, generous and engaging.

Awards

Drew Barrymore and David Arquette won the for her roles Film Prize Blockbuster Entertainment Award . Barrymore was also nominated for the MTV Movie Award , the Kids' Choice Award and the Teen Choice Award . Leelee Sobieski was nominated for the YoungStar Award .

Others

The idea that a young journalist would pretend to be a schoolgirl to write an article had already existed in the German film class wedges 30 years earlier .
