New Super Mario Bros. U is a 2D - Jump 'n' Run - Video Game of the Japanese company Nintendo . The game acted as one of the starting titles of the Wii U , which was released on November 30, 2012. Playfully it is based on previous offshoots such as B. New Super Mario Bros. Wii . It supports numerous functions of the Wii U, for example the touchscreen of the Wii U GamePad , for the first time in a New Super Mario Bros. game HD graphics ( 720p ) and the now discontinued Nintendo-exclusive social network Miiverse .

    action

In New Super Mario Bros. U, the story was changed for the first time, in contrast to its predecessors. It is not Peach who is kidnapped by Bowser, but Bowser attacks the castle with his henchmen, the so-called Koopalingen, and throws Mario with Luigi and the two toads out of the castle to the end of the mushroom kingdom with the help of a huge steel robot hand. Now they have to fight their way through the different worlds and find their way back to the castle. After a few boss fights, a dark purple glowing tornado forms around the castle.

    development

After the Wii U was unveiled on June 7, 2011, a tech demo called New Super Mario Bros. Mii was playable. It corresponded to the Wii offshoot of the New Super Mario Bros. Wii series with small differences and HD graphics. Speculations that it was a full-fledged game, Nintendo did not want to confirm at the time, but pointed out that it was only a demo that should show the performance of the Wii U.

In April 2012, both Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo confirmed that they wanted to introduce a 2D Mario offshoot for the Wii U at the Electronic Entertainment Expo , E3 for short , in early June , based on the demo shown last year.

During the Nintendo Direct presentation one day before the E3 conference, Nintendo President Satoru showed Iwata a few seconds out of the game to demonstrate the integration of the Miiverse social network in games. At the game fair, the game was finally as New Super Mario Bros. U presented. A trailer was shown, information was given and a playable demo was also provided.

    All worlds (chronology)

The world map has also been changed compared to its predecessor: There is now a large world map, similar to Super Mario World , and the worlds now have names.

    • World 1: oak grove
    • World 2: sand cake desert
    • World 3: Mint Sea
    • World 4: Ice cube falls
    • World 5: Lemonade Jungle
    • World 6: rock candy mines
    • World 7: cotton candy cloud zone
    • World 8: Peach's Castle
    • World 9: Superstar Boulevard (additional world)

You can move around on the world map by running or let yourself be shot into a world with tubes. After world 2 you can choose between the ice cube falls and the Mint Sea, so you only have to complete one of the worlds to get to the lemonade jungle. In addition, the baby yoshis are distributed on the world map, which you can take with you to the individual levels. There are some hidden target flags that can be used to jump over a world (or get to the castle).

    Power ups

The power-ups are used to give the character different abilities by transforming them or (temporarily) strengthening them.

    Classic power-ups

    Super mushroom

Mario becomes Super-Mario (bigger), can withstand one hit more than in normal form and can now destroy wall blocks.

    Fire flower

The player also grows taller and can throw fireballs that are used to defeat opponents. In addition, it does not become small again after receiving damage, but changes to the same state as that triggered by the super mushroom.

    Ice flower

The player grows tall as with the fire flower, but can throw ice balls instead of fireballs, which can freeze most of all opponents. Frozen enemies can be picked up and thrown at other enemies depending on their size. The same effect after damage as with the fire flower.

    1-up mushroom

The player gets an additional try.

    Mini mushroom

The player becomes very small, can run faster, jump higher and much further, walk over water and run up walls. If he takes damage in this state, he is instantly defeated.

    star

The player becomes invulnerable for 10 seconds and defeats most opponents just by touch.

Propeller Mushroom (only on Superstar Boulevard)

The player grows tall and can fly high after performing a twist jump. The same effect after damage as with the fire flower.

Penguin suit (only on Superstar Boulevard)

The player slips into a penguin suit. As a result, he does not slip on icy surfaces, swims faster through water and can slide over ice and water on his stomach. As with the ice flower, it is possible to freeze opponents. The same effect after damage as with the fire flower.

    New power-ups

    Super acorn

The player turns into a flying squirrel. This allows it to slide down safely and shake the controller to create a puff of air that pushes it up. In addition, as a flying squirrel, the player has the ability to cling to walls, which makes wall jumping much easier.

    P-acorn

Gives the player the same skills as the super acorn, but the air puff can be performed as many times as you want. If the player ends a level as a P-flying squirrel, he transforms himself back into the normal flying squirrel.

    Yoshi and baby yoshis

The Baby Yoshis and the Big Yoshi are not power-ups, but they support the player in different ways.

    Yoshi

The great Yoshi has the same skills as in the previous game New Super Mario Bros. Wii . If the player sits on Yoshi, he can perform a flutter jump to get to higher places or use his long tongue to eat opponents. Yoshi also has the ability to jump on spiky enemies and piranha plants without taking damage.

    Pink baby yoshi

The pink baby Yoshi can inflate like a balloon. This allows the player to easily cross large chasms by gliding over them with the balloon yoshi. In addition, each Baby Yoshi can eat smaller opponents.

    Blue baby yoshi

The blue baby yoshi has the ability to spit bubbles. This will defeat smaller enemies, leaving behind coins or sometimes even a power-up. You can also jump on the spat bubbles.

    Yellow baby yoshi

Dark levels can be brightened up with the yellow baby yoshi. By shaking the controller, nearby enemies can also be blinded and stunned.

    Gameplay

New Super Mario Bros. U is playfully based on New Super Mario Bros. Wii . Outstanding differences are the use of the Wii U controller, five-player multiplayer mode and the integration of the Miiverse social network . In single player mode, the game can be played both on the TV screen and exclusively on the controller thanks to the built-in touchscreen.

Up to five players can play New Super Mario Bros. U together at the same time. Up to four players can appear on the television screen, the characters Mario, Luigi, yellow toad, blue toad or a Mii are available .

You can play the game alone, both on the TV screen and exclusively on the GamePad screen. In the latter scenario, the television can be used for other purposes, all game events are displayed on the GamePad. The Wii-U console must be switched on for this.

A fifth player can help the other players using the GamePad. By touching the touchscreen, he can make small platforms appear at the appropriate point on which the other players can jump. However, these platforms disappear after a few seconds. In the same way, the player can use the GamePad to prevent opponents from attacking. In Boost mode, the player can use the GamePad to strategically support the other players - and thus, for example, enable speed runs - or place obstacles in the way and compete against the others.

There is also what is known as the challenge mode . There are 80 challenges in total in this mode. With time challenges you have to complete certain levels as quickly as possible. In the coin challenges you have to collect as many or as few coins as possible. There are also 1UP challenges where you have to jump on so many opponents to get 1UPs. Depending on how well you have mastered a challenge, you can win bronze, silver or gold medals.

The Wii-U-own social network Miiverse is in New Super Mario Bros. U involved. So it is possible to write and publish comments. For example, if the player fails in a level, comments from other players in a similar situation are displayed. Comments from other players are also visible on the world map.

    New Super Luigi U

At E3 2013 an expansion for New Super Mario Bros. U was announced, which is called New Super Luigi U. On the one hand, it was offered as a download from Nintendo eShop on June 20, 2013 , thus expanding the main game, and on the other hand, it was also released as a separate retail version on July 26, 2013. In contrast to the main game, there is no Mario in this offshoot, the game focuses entirely on his brother Luigi. As a substitute for Mario, the thieving Mopsie can be played in the multiplayer mode. The game was released for the year of Luigi , which was ushered in for the 30th anniversary of Luigi's first appearance. The difference to the main game is that Luigi has a different physics, e.g. the changed jumping mechanics.

Some newer versions of New Super Mario Bros. U include New Super Luigi U for free, such as: B. in the Nintendo Selects version for Wii U, but also in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe with slightly improved graphics and Toadette (or Peachette) as a playable character.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe

In the Nintendo Direct presentation on September 14, 2018, New Super Mario Bros. U was announced together with New Super Luigi U as a port for the Nintendo Switch under the name New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe . The deluxe version of the two New Super Mario Bros. games offers a full HD resolution as well as the two new characters Mopsie and Toadette , which are particularly suitable for beginners. The game was finally released on January 11, 2019 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
