history

Foundation and first EP

Jason Newsted (vocals, bass)

The band is named after bassist Jason Newsted , who made a name for himself with the band Flotsam and Jetsam in the mid-1980s and was a member of Metallica between 1986 and 2001 . After Newsted appeared again musically at the end of 2011 on the occasion of Metallica's 30th band anniversary after a break of several years, Newsted decided to found a new band. The other founding members were the guitarist Jessie Farnsworth and the drummer Jesus Mendez Jr. With both musicians Newsted previously completed numerous jam sessions .

Jessie Farnsworth (guitar)

In an interview with the German magazine Rock Hard , Newsted stated that he had named his new band after himself due to the lengthy legal process surrounding his former band Echobrain . Echobrain have been sued for alleged copyright infringement by the Texan band Echo Drain . Jason Newsted and Echobrain won the lawsuit, but had to pay for it in the amount of about half a million dollars . In retrospect, Echo Drain would have "destroyed" Echobrain.

The musicians rented a friend's recording studio for $ 2,000 and recorded five songs within a week. Among them was the song "Soldierhead", which was played a short time later by various radio stations . The band was then signed by Epic Records . On January 8, 2013, Newsted released their debut EP Metal on iTunes and shot a music video for the song "Soldierhead". The EP was sold about 6,200 times in the US in the first week after its release and reached number 62 on the US album charts .

Heavy metal music and breakup

Mike Mushok (guitar)

In March 2013, Staind guitarist Mike Mushok joined the band. which recorded her debut album Heavy Metal Music the following month. Jason Newsted originally planned to release three EPs at short intervals, but the record label rejected this. On April 19, 2013, the band played their first concert in Walnut Creek . Numerous festival appearances followed in Europe, for example at Rock am Ring , With Full Force , the Graspop Metal Meeting and the Sweden Rock Festival . In the summer of 2013 the band played as part of the gigantour of the band Megadeth in North America. Newsted had to cancel the concerts in Canada because Jason Newsted fell ill with atypical pneumonia .

The release of the debut album Heavy Metal Music took place on August 2, 2013. The album reached number 17 in the German and number 15 in the Swiss album charts. In the USA about 8,000 copies were sold in the first week and the album reached number 40 on the album charts. A music video was shot for the song "King of the Underdogs". At the Loudwire Music Awards 2013 Newsted was nominated for Best New Artist and Jason Newsted for Best Bassist , but the awards went to Device and Lemmy Kilmister respectively . In February 2014 Newsted were supposed to take part in the Soundwave Festivals in Australia . However, the performances were canceled.

In December 2014, Mike Mushok stated in an interview that there were no plans for further albums or tours because Newsted had "closed" the band about a year ago. In August 2016, Jason Newsted stated that although he had written another studio album, it had not yet been completed because, according to Newsted, it was not yet ready for fans. Newsted told the US magazine Billboard that he wanted to do too many things at once and put the new material aside for now. In March 2017, Jason Newsted added that the band had cost him several hundred thousand dollars and that the music business was now very brutal.

style

Jesus Mendez Jr. (drums)

Newsted played Heavy Metal, which was mostly kept at a medium tempo and sounded bass-heavy. All music and lyrics were written by Jason Newsted. Matthias Mineur of the German magazine Metal Hammer described Newsted as "a hybrid of those bands that Newsted came to fame with" and named Metallica, Flotsam and Jetsam, Ozzy Osbourne , Voivod and Zakk Wylde as influences. For Ingo Nentwich from the online magazine Metal.de , the debut album sounded like a mixture of Motörhead and Anvil . Chad Bowar from the online magazine Loudwire added the band Prong as a comparison. Jason Newsted's beefy vocals combine influences from Lemmy Kilmister (Motörhead), Dave Mustaine ( Megadeth ) and Denis "Snake" Belanger (VoiVod).
