Non ho l'età (per amarti) ( Italian for “I'm not old enough [to love you]”) is a song by Gene Colonnello , Nisa and Mario Panzeri from 1964. The Italian singer Gigliola Cinquetti first won that Sanremo Festival 1964 and subsequently the Eurovision Song Contest 1964 . This success resulted in several cover versions (also in foreign languages) , including the French version Je suis à toi by Patricia Carli .

background

Gigliola Cinquetti had first won a singing competition in her hometown of Verona and, at the special request of Gianni Ravera , then artistic director of the Sanremo Festival , entered the newcomer competition Festival di Castrocaro in 1963 at the age of 15 . With her renewed victory in Castrocaro , the singer automatically qualified for next year's Sanremo festival. Ravera had introduced a number of new rules in 1964 in order to increase the popularity of the festival again. Each participant received an international guest who performed the respective song in a second version. In the case of Cinquetti, this was Italo-Belgian Patricia Carli .

The song selected by the record label CGD was written by a songwriting team with experience in Sanremo: Mario Panzeri had already been involved in the first Sanremo winning song Grazie dei fior by Nilla Pizzi in 1951 , Nisa had a song in the running for the first time in 1953 and Colonnello was a few years earlier even started as a singer. Due to the rule that each songwriter could only have one song in the competition, Colonnello's name was not mentioned (he had also written L'inverno cosa fai? For Piero Focaccia that year) and was only registered afterwards. The song was written by the only 16-year-old singer on the body and its natural, innocent naive appearance completely matched the expectations of strong Christian Democrat dominated Rai : in sittsamem dress without makeup and with hair zusammengebundenem.

Success in Sanremo and at the ESC

Contrary to the predictions that spoke for Roby Ferrante or Domenico Modugno in Sanremo in 1964 , the nationwide ("demoscopic") public juries (which, due to the new rules, consist of 50% under 25-year-olds) named Cinquetti and Carli as winners. Modugno expressed his displeasure very clearly and described the result as buffonata , "nonsense". Cinquetti is still the youngest ever winner of the Sanremo Festival. The single released with the B-side Sei un bravo ragazzo (by Franco Migliacci and Enrico Polito ) was also a sales success after the festival victory, but initially lost to Bobby Solo's Sanremo contribution Una lacrima sul viso and only reached third place.

As in previous years, the winning song of the Sanremo Festival also represented the Italian contribution to the Eurovision Song Contest , which took place in Copenhagen at the end of March that year . Cinquetti was also able to celebrate a great success there with Non ho l'età , presented just as well and conservatively as in Sanremo, and achieve the first ESC victory for Italy. After that, the single rose to number one in the charts in Italy and the song was also a chart success abroad and attracted a number of foreign-language versions. Cinquetti himself recorded the song in Spanish ( No tengo edad , text by Pacho ), French ( Je suis à toi , text by Patricia Carli), German ( Luna nel blu , text by Kurt Hertha ), Japanese (夢 み る 想 い, Yumemiru Omoi , Text by Hiroshi Arakawa ) and English ( This Is My Prayer , text by Buddy Kaye and Philip Springer ) in, Patricia Carli in French and Italian.

music

The structure of the song follows the ABABA scheme ( verse - refrain - verse - refrain - verse). It is in 4/4 time , but is characterized both in melody and accompaniment by an almost continuous triplet rhythm . The original key is F major .

The arrangements come from Franco Monaldi , who also conducted Cinquetti's appearances in Sanremo and Copenhagen, and are very string-heavy . In the opening four bars in particular, the strings come to the fore with fast, rising glissandos , which each introduce the descending chords of the piano in the sequence I - IV -I- V (7) . The stanzas are sung over a simple cadence , which is extended by the sixth degree (D minor) in the second measure; In contrast to the other degrees, the dominant seventh chord extends over two bars. During the first run, the accompaniment remains very restrained; only when it is repeated do the strings and the descending piano chords start again. The music increases through faster string movements and a more intense singing voice towards the short refrain, where the chord progression of the verse is additionally extended by an A major seventh chord (third degree):

{<< \ new ChordNames {\ chordmode {s f1 a: 7}} \ new Staff \ relative f '{\ tempo 4 = 70 \ key f \ major \ time 4/4 \ partial 4 \ autoBeamOff \ times 2/3 {c8 fg} a4 a ~ \ times 2/3 {a8 fg} \ times 2/3 {a bes a} \ times 2/3 {g4 a8} g2} \ addlyrics {La - scia ch'io vi - va un a - mo - re ro - man - ti - co} >>}

(Music quotation from the piano reduction Je suis à toi licensed by Suvini Zerboni / Sugarmusic , Editions musicales Eddie Barclay [649.B], Paris 1964.)

The chorus remains on the dominant ( half-ending ) and then returns to the verse. This is repeated once, with the arrangement remaining unchanged. The last stanza ends with a shortened version of the introduction, which ends on the tonic ( plagal closing ).

Cinquetti's singing is clean, graceful and delicate, with few nuances, but neat and precise. The singer almost begins the verse with a whisper to increase the chorus. Even when performing, she sang strictly according to the notes, leaving no room for variations.

text

The singer turns to an unknown person in the text. In the first stanza she declares that she is too young to love them or even to go out for two; after all, she didn't know what to say, no matter how ignorant she was. In the chorus follows the request to let her live a “romantic” love (un amore romantico) first until she is old enough. Then she (second stanza) will give all her love to the person addressed, if they have been waiting. The text of the third stanza, with which the song ends, is identical to that of the second; all stanzas begin with the same lines.

Cinquetti herself declared in 2014 that she had never been able to get used to the conservative, reactionary message of the song and that her career had therefore long suffered under the pressure of this successful title. Alberto Salerno , son of lyricist Nisa, however, denied the reactionary content of the song, saying that the text was precisely adapted to the social circumstances of a young girl in Italy in 1964.

reception

The song was a hit across Europe after the ESC victory and sold more than two million times. Patricia Carli also had success with Je suis à toi in France . Countless cover versions appeared, in addition to the original languages (Italian, French, Spanish, English, German, Japanese) and eight others (Dutch, Czech, Polish, Danish, Finnish, Romanian, Icelandic and Chinese).

In 2014, the song was once again the subject of the media in Italy when the newly sworn in Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi quoted it in his speech to the Senate on February 24, 2014. He was alluding to his relatively young age (39), when he presented himself to the Senate, for which the right to stand for 40 years applies. In this context, the media took up the importance of the text and Cinquetti's role. In 2017 the documentary Non ho l'età was released , which addresses the importance of the song for Italians who have emigrated to Switzerland .
