features

The Dollerbaechlein in the south of the Nonnenbruchwald

The contiguous forest area was fragmented by the mining activity without this being able to endanger its continued existence. The potash mines were exploited for 100 years, from 1904 to 2004, and then shut down. Today it is threatened by the advancing development of the region.

This forest, the soil of which is covered with loess , is located in the alluvial cone of Doller and Thur . The forest is interspersed with steppe-like clearings , heaps and old stone quarries in which ponds form. The wind erosion of the heaps increased the salinity of the soil and, to some extent, changed the landscape. Numerous hiking trails make it possible to cross the forest and get to the various communities. By ordinance of May 25, 2004, the forest area on an area of 340.2239 hectares in the area of the communities Kingersheim, Lutterbach, Pfastatt, Reiningen, Reichweiler and Wittenheim was declared a forest reserve.

Trees

The Nonnenbruchwald is characterized by the following deciduous trees: oak , red beech , hornbeam , ash , and Scots pine .

biodiversity

On the occasion of the biodiversity day in 2011, natural scientists recorded the animal species occurring at the Rothmoos and Silbermättle in the south of the former Amélie II potash mine named after Amélie Zurcher (municipalities of Reichweiler and Wittelsheim). The occurrence of 37 species that are on the Red List in Alsace could be proven.
