Norbert Denef (born May 5, 1949 in Delitzsch ) was chairman of the network for victims of sexual violence ( netzwerkB ) from 2010 to 2018 . Denef himself is a victim of sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church .

Life and work

In his hometown of Delitzsch, Denef was abused as an altar boy from 10 to 16 years old by a priest and from 16 to 18 years old by an organist .

The first perpetrator, Alfons Kamphusmann (1924–1998), was ordained a priest in 1952. He was vicar and curator in the Propstei zu Halle , then in Droyssig , Delitzsch, Nordhausen , Langenweddingen , Hecklingen , Wittenberg-Piesteritz and Niedertiefenbach ( Diocese of Limburg ). He retired in 1990 and passed away eight years later. The second perpetrator, organist and choir director of the community, lives in retirement and has never been prosecuted.

Denef ignored what had happened for a long time, even invited the priest to his wedding and had him married in 1973.

Denef continued to live inconspicuously, he was a technician in the Leipzig Opera House until 1981 and at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt am Main from 1981 to 1988, then technical director at the Bürgerhaus Dietzenbach from 1991 to 1998 and at the Stadttheater Rüsselsheim from 1991 to 1998. Until In 2012 he worked in facility management for the city administration of Rüsselsheim. Denef has two children.

Work-up

At the age of 40, Denef suffered a mental breakdown. He had to learn to talk about his fate, which he first achieved in the family in November 1993. In 2003, Denef was offered compensation for the suffering he had suffered from the diocese of Magdeburg , but in connection with an obligation of confidentiality. In 2005 he finally received 25,000 euros from the diocese, whereby the confidentiality obligation in the 2005 contract was deleted. Norbert Denef is considered to be the first victim in Germany who was able to obtain compensation from the Roman Catholic Church.

Denef still suffers from the consequences of years of abuse, including depression and other consequences of post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of sexual abuse in childhood . In 2007 Denef's book I Was Sexually Abused was published . The play Alles muss raus! Was created on the basis of the book . , which premiered on September 20, 2008 in the Frankfurt Authors Theater .

Norbert Denef submitted a petition to abolish the statute of limitations for offenses in pediatric crime in civil law, which the German Bundestag rejected in December 2008. Denef then fought before the European Court of Human Rights to have the statute of limitations for sexual abuse abolished in civil law. The lawsuit was dismissed without giving any reason.

In December 2009 Denef went to the parish of St. Marien in his home town of Delitzsch. He was not given an opportunity to talk. Denef left an open letter on the door of the church.

In the spring of 2010, Denef and other victims founded the network victims of sexual violence , or netzwerkB for short . The core demands of the organization include the abolition of statutes of limitations, the obligation to report child abuse, the investigation of past crimes and appropriate compensation.

In the abuse debate at the Ecumenical Church Congress 2010 , Denef stepped up to the podium during the speech by Father Klaus Mertes , Rector of the Berlin Canisius College , and demanded that the victims participate in the debate about sexualised violence. Bishop Stephan Ackermann , Commissioner for Abuse at the German Bishops' Conference, said: “I am shocked by the course of the event. The man is right: we are talking about institutions. I have the feeling that the victims are being forgotten. "

Denef was among the selected candidates for the award of the taz Panter Prize in September 2011, but received no prize.

On December 6, 2011, Norbert Denef was invited to the SPD's federal party conference as a guest speaker and spoke about the situation and suffering of the victims. The party congress decided unanimously to campaign for a lifting of the statute of limitations in the Bundestag.

From June 8 to July 24, 2012, Norbert Denef was on hunger strike : “I am on a hunger strike because the SPD parliamentary group is not prepared to advocate lifting the statute of limitations for sexualised violence in the German Bundestag, although the delegates do at the federal party congress of the SPD on December 6, 2011 clearly in favor of it. ”Other victims joined the hunger strike. On July 13, 2012, Denef went to the grounds in front of the Reichstag to talk to SPD politicians. The police obstructed an interview with the Reuters agency . Around the same time, the petition from netzwerkB at Avaaz received over 60,000 signatures. The German Bundestag refused to accept the signatures. Denef ended his hunger strike after 46 days. The SPD's draft law of October 9, 2010 was dealt with in the Bundestag on September 26, 2012 in response to a special request for rules of procedure.

In May 2013 the extension of the statute of limitations ( law to strengthen the rights of victims of sexual abuse ) was confirmed by the Federal Council. In 2016 there was a further reform of the sex criminal law.

In November 2013, on the twentieth anniversary of the fact that Denef broke his silence about his family of origin, Denef traveled to Rome to seek a conversation with the Holy See. He demonstrated in St. Peter's Square . A conversation did not take place. In April 2018, Norbert Denef last spoke to Hans Zollner , who would like to submit Denef's proposal for the act of reconciliation to the Pontifical Child Protection Commission .

In April 2018, Norbert Denef briefed the public about his cancer. After Norbert Denef had survived chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and the creation of a stoma , he reported that he had never been able to attend the medical check- ups due to his trauma . He saw responsibility with the diocese of Magdeburg, which had known about the pastor's deeds for years. Denef demanded compensation of one million euros from the diocese of Magdeburg.

Looking for a way to move holistically to bring body, mind and soul into harmony, Denef developed tires in 2016 based on Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian people , who adapt flexibly and harmoniously to different positions; the movements with the hoop called denefhoop serve meditation and inner liberation as well as gymnastics .
