Oiski! Poiski! - News from Noah's Island (original title: Noah's Island ) is an animated series by the EBU , which was launched in 1997 under the leadership of WDR and BBC . Oiski! Poiski! is about an island floating in the sea, which, under the guidance of the polar bear Noah, sets course for a legendary place where all the animals traveling with it want to live together in peace. Numerous different animal species live on the island, such as bears and monkeys , but also supposedly extinct species such as mammoths and dodos . On the journey around the globe, more and more animals find refuge on Noah's island. The series was directed by Philippe Leclerc, Frederic Trouillot and Alan Simpson.
action
The three seasons of the series each have 13 episodes of 25 minutes each. The first season was created in 1997, the second in 1998 and the third in 1999.
season 1
At the beginning there is a meteorite impact , as a result of which a piece of coast is separated from the mainland and from then on drifts in the sea. The mammoths Almut and Helmut, a mute rabbit and the polar bear Noah live on the island . When Noah learns of the existence of the paradise Diamantina, a piece of land that has remained undiscovered by humans, he decides to steer the floating island to this place. He uses the energy of the fireball that is boiling inside the island. When the ship of a zoo sinks very close to Noah's island, he takes the dead animals into his home. But the peaceful coexistence of animals that Noah strived for turns out to be a great challenge. On the trip to Diamantina, the inhabitants of Noah's island are repeatedly threatened by natural disasters such as hurricanes and find themselves in awkward situations. When the floating island seems to be only a few days away from Diamantina, it gets stuck in the Antarctic ice.
season 2
At the beginning there is a tragic accident: Noah's island is still floating just before Diamantina. The old and wise mammoth lady Almut prophesies her death should she reach the island of Diamantina. In order to save his wife, Mammut Helmut steers the energy of the fireball in a different direction, so that Noah's island gets caught in an ocean current and drifts just past the hoped-for destination Diamantina. Noah falls into sadness, but is soon motivated again when the newly arrived female gorilla, Gertie, suggests looking for endangered species and taking them to the island. The island steers around in the Indian Ocean to save endangered animals.
Also in this season the inhabitants of the island get into more or less dangerous adventures. For example, you have to flee from a huge tidal wave or deal with a Malagasy finger animal. Among the new exotic inhabitants to find a wombat named Wommie, a pangolin , a bandicoot , a mongoose and a Komodo dragon . At the end of the season, Noah's island reaches the praised Diamantina after a long and grueling journey.
season 3
The third season describes the life of Noah and his friends in Diamantina. To make the animals of the island happy, Noah sets sail again with his island. He wants to ensure the continued existence of the animal community and starts looking for partners for his friends. For example, the mandrill Rick and the kangaroo Bumera find a suitable female and male, respectively. But soon the animals have to realize with resignation that Diamantina is not the paradise that everyone thought it was. They must fight together against floods and earthquakes. The grim mammoth Miesmut, who had survived all these years in Diamantina, also makes life difficult for Noah's friends. Rick and Sascha fall into the clutches of a mysterious frog queen who lives in an underground cave system. When gorilla lady Gertie is expecting a young from her husband Rocco, she urges the community to leave the destructive place. When Noah tries to convince his friends to stay, they refuse to continue to place themselves under his leadership. The bear Ursula becomes the new captain. Despite Noah's attempt to continue to direct all events indirectly through a love relationship with her, in the end all islanders decide to leave Diamantina. The series ends with the moving island following a large whale, which the kangaroo Bumera suspects could lead to a real animal paradise.
Characters
Noah
As the captain of the floating island, the polar bear Noah plays a central role in the series. He is characterized by his calm and thoughtful manner. In an emergency he always has advice and if not, he turns to the mammoths. In tricky situations, Noah can always elicit a "... you dear little bit ...". In the German version he is spoken by Hans Teuscher (Season 1) and Klaus Sonnenschein .
Sasha
Sascha is the secret star of the series. He is a small but very clever Russian desman . He joins Noah's island in the third episode after being freed from a circus. Sascha often talks about his time in Minsk and soon becomes Noah's best friend. His trademarks are the Russian accent and the “Oiski! Poiski ".
Rick
Mandrill Rick would like to be human ("... I'm almost-almost human ..."). He tries to teach himself to read and eagerly waits for contact with people, which clearly distinguishes him from the other animals, who have all experienced too much suffering from people and now avoid them. Rick also trains hyenas in his cave and often causes quarrels and anger among the animals. As the story progresses, Rick changes into a better animal and the other characters like Noah tolerate him. He is spoken by Andreas Mannkopff .
Rocco
Rocco is a good-natured but spirited gorilla who takes care of the infirmary on Noah's Island. While he mourned the death of his wife Hettie in the first season, he found a new female with Gertie in season 2.
Bumera
The island's nurse is the kangaroo Bumera, who is always at the side of the doctor Rocco, although she argues with him every day. It is not uncommon for her to use her reason to speak to the conscience of other animals on the island.
Ursula
Ursula is a childishly naive brown bear who has a close friendship with the panda bear Chiang. The two would rather roam the island's beaches than help elsewhere, which often leads to arguments. Nonetheless, Ursula is very popular with her friends and in the third season she becomes an increasingly critical critic of Noah's plans.
Almut and Helmut
Helmut is the old, silly mammoth that Almut has confessed to love every day for centuries. But she doesn't want to know anything about it at first and feels visibly annoyed by Helmut's constant marriage plans. Almut is Noah's point of contact when he doesn't know what to do next. Most of the time she can help with her immeasurable wisdom and life experience.
Valve rhino
The valve rhino is a sentimental rhinoceros whose job inside the island is to open and close the valve for the island's lava drive (a round stone in front of the exit hole). Ventil-Rhino speaks very rarely, but always gives a happy, frugal “Pom Pom Piddl Pom”.
More characters
In addition, the island is home to the vulture squadron, the grief whale, the aardvark Carmen and many other animals that are often not even mentioned by name.
Series title
The German series title Oiski! Poiski! refers to the exclamation of muskrat weevil Sascha. This expression is both an exclamation of astonishment, displeasure and joy. From time to time Sascha also uses the superlative: Oiski! Poiski! Double poiski!
