He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1994 in the first round as the second overall player by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim . After he started the 1994/95 season shortened because of the lockout with the Brandon Wheat Kings in the Canadian junior league Western Hockey League , the defender played for Anaheim in the National Hockey League for a year and a half . The 1995/96 season he ended with the Winnipeg Jets . From 1999 to 2002 Twerdowski played again for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the NHL, before he won the prestigious Stanley Cup for the first time with the New Jersey Devils in the 2002/03 season. In the finals, the left-handed shooter prevailed in the best-of-seven series against his ex-club from Anaheim with 4-3 wins. Following this success, the national player returned to Russia, where he played for HK Awangard Omsk in the Super League for two years . With Omsk he first won the national championship in the 2003/04 season , before he was successful at international level with Awangard in the IIHF European Champions Cup in 2005 .
For the 2005/06 season Twerdowski received a contract with the Carolina Hurricanes , with whom he was able to win the Stanley Cup for the second time in his career. What followed was a less successful year with the Los Angeles Kings and their farm team from the American Hockey League , the Manchester Monarchs . As of 2007, the 2002 Olympian was on the ice for Salawat Julajew Ufa , with whom he became Russian champion in the 2007/08 season. From the 2008/09 season he joined the team from Ufa in the newly founded Continental Hockey League , whose championship title, the Gagarin Cup , he won with his team in the 2010/11 season.
