reception
criticism
The first season of the series received a Metascore of 89/100 on Metacritic based on 20 reviews.
Henning Harder from Serienjunkies.de especially praises the acting performance of the actors, especially that of Frances McDormand : “With the title role in Olive Kitteridge, Frances McDormand surpassed himself. The four-part miniseries tells the story of a bitter woman who is confronted with her loneliness. A gripping drama between tragedy and comedy. [...] She distinguishes her Olive Kitteridge with a hardness that does not tolerate any deviation, but at the same time conveys at all times that there is a deeply vulnerable character behind it. This trait becomes more and more clear in the course of history and digs its way into the light of day. ”In conclusion, he writes:“ With 'Olive Kitteridge', the US broadcaster HBO is once again showing what it does best: telling good drama. This is due, on the one hand, to the history of the famous book by Elizabeth Strout and, on the other hand, to Frances McDormand's extraordinary character portrayal. "
Benjamin Moldenhauer, journalist at Spiegel Online , writes in his conclusion: “You don't get that often: A series that places its cliffhanger after the third minute. And otherwise, 'Olive Kitteridge' with Frances McDormand rises above the already high US series standards. […] Frances McDormand plays the role of her life here […]. Like 'Top of the Lake' and 'True Detective' recently, 'Olive Kitteridge' is one of the few TV productions whose images are linked to the aesthetics of cinema. [...] Also in 'Olive Kitteridge' the general and exemplary are peeled out of the particular. And as in Lisa Cholodenko's works for the big screen, a small gesture, a change of tone or a minimal change in facial expressions are enough to show what it can mean to love the same person for years.
So in the end we see a completely normal life, you recognize yourself again - even if maybe not always with pleasure. It is this equally analytical and empathic look that makes 'Olive Kitteridge' one of the best series in recent years. "
Oliver Kaever from Zeit.de also has a positive opinion of the series: “[...] Olive Kitteridge shows that the big days of the series are of course by no means over. [...] The creators manage to tie everything together into a compact masterpiece: the epic narration of the novel; the drama of the TV series; the visual of the cinema. […] An impressionistically dabbed, airily narrated novel turns into a strong, concentrated drama in the series. […] But screenwriter Jane Anderson takes a different approach: She radically cuts episodes and characters together, spins other narrative threads on her own. And she clearly puts one character in the spotlight: Olive Kitteridge, played by Frances McDormand with terrifying honesty.
This narrative concentration has the consequence that the motifs and themes, which are complex and ambiguous in the novel, appear powerful and dramatic in the series. It's about life in a marriage that, despite all the drama, lasts for decades. About aging and passing away, about depression, thoughts of suicide and dying. [...] Olive Kitteridge is a work of art in its own right that does not have to be compared with other narrative genres. It's not a novel, not a cinema. But a very strong piece of television. "
