final
Date: July 24, 1976, 3 p.m.
Two weeks before the competition, the Soviet athlete Alexander Baryschnikow had achieved a favorite position with his world record of exactly 22 meters. Baryshnikov was the first athlete to use the new twisting technique in the shot put . In the qualification, Baryschnikow confirmed his special position: In his first stroke he achieved a new Olympic record with 21.32 m . Other medal contenders were the GDR athletes Hans-Peter Gies, Olympic Knights of 1972 , Udo Beyer and Heinz-Joachim Rothenburg and the two Americans Allan Feuerbach and George Woods.
In the final, Baryschnikow took the lead with his first attempt, behind him was the GDR athlete Beyer. However, the widths achieved were not yet at the expected level. In the second round Beyer came within three centimeters of Baryschnikow, but Feuerbach now took the lead with a two centimeter lead; the distances were very close, everything was still open. In lap three, the level rose again. Baryschnikow achieved 21.00 m and took the lead again in front of Feuerbach and Beyer. In the fifth round the order changed significantly again. First Beyer hit the ball to 21.05 m, then Baryschnikow's compatriot Evgeny Mironov came to 21.03 m. Baryschnikow and Feuerbach had slipped to third and fourth place. In the last lap nothing changed in the order. Udo Beyer was Olympic champion, the two Soviet athletes Evgeni Mironow and Alexander Baryschnikow won silver and bronze. Baryshnikov's Olympic record from qualifying was not reached in the final.
Udo Beyer became the first Olympic champion in the GDR in the shot put .
