The rowing competition in two without a helmsman as part of the rowing regatta of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was held from August 6th to 11th, 2016 in the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon . 26 athletes in 13 teams competed.
The competition, which was held over the Olympic rowing distance of 2000 meters, began with three preliminary runs with four or five teams each. The first, second and third placed teams in the preliminary runs qualified directly for the semi-finals, while the remaining four teams had to go to the repechage . Here the first three teams qualified again for the semi-finals. In the two rounds of the semi-finals, the top three teams qualified for the final, while the fourth to sixth placed teams rowed for 7th to 12th place in the B final. In the final on August 11th, six teams competed for Olympic medals.
The teams qualified for the next round are highlighted in light green.
As expected, the New Zealand duo of Hamish Bond and Eric Murray dominated the competition. The team known as "Kiwipair" had won all races since 2009, including at international level, winning seven world championship titles and the Olympic victory in London as well as setting the world record in two-without. The silver medalists Lawrence Brittain and Shaun Keeling from South Africa crossed the finish line about three seconds behind, while Giovanni Abagnale and Marco Di Costanzo from Italy won bronze .
