Oppenheim (Cologne family)
The family of the von Oppenheim is one of the Rhineland-Palatinate Oppenheim originating aristocratic family of entrepreneurs , among others, already in Frankfurt the 18th century worked in banking. They are a branch of the Jewish Oppenheimer family , which go back to Amschel Oppenheim († after 1505 in Worms). The Oppenheim family owned the Sal. Oppenheim jr & Cie . Bank until it was sold in October 2009 . Up until then, Sal. Oppenheim was the largest independent bank in Europe with total assets of 41.4 billion euros and over 350 billion euros in managed capital. According to Forbes' family dynasties, the von Oppenheim family split their billion- dollar fortune among 46 members.
history
The sex starts its regular series with Samuel Oppenheim , businessman in Worms, who was born around 1550 and died 1,601th In 1740 a member of the family moved from Frankfurt am Main to Bonn , where Elector Clemens August installed and protected him - along with other Jewish merchants - as court factors and suppliers. Born in Bonn, Salomon Oppenheim junior founded a bill of exchange and commission business in 1789, which developed into the Oppenheim bank and in 1904 into the Sal. Oppenheim private bank . Simon Oppenheim, banker in Cologne and royal Prussian secret councilor, was elevated to the status of Austrian and Prussian baron in 1868 as a knight of the Iron Crown Order, 2nd class .
In 1798, the French revolutionary troops under Napoleon deposed the Elector of the Electorate of Cologne , whose capital was Bonn. The French introduced religious freedom in Cologne and all the areas on the left bank of the Rhine that they annexed . This was the first time in 400 years that Jews were able to settle in Cologne. Oppenheim then moved to the then important banking center of Cologne , where the JH Stein bank (1790) and A. Schaaffhausen'sche Bankverein (since 1791) had their headquarters. When Salomon Oppenheim died in 1828, his widow Therese continued the business with her sons Simon and Abraham Oppenheim . In 1834 Abraham married Charlotte Beyfus, a granddaughter of Mayer Amschel Rothschild , who founded the Rothschild banking house .
Owner family
The descendants of Eduard von Oppenheim (1831–1909) and Amalie Heuser (1835–1903) were the owners of the bank until it was sold to Deutsche Bank in 2009. In August 1954 all limited partner shares were held by 10 shareholders around Countess Emmy Arco-Valley (née Freiin von Oppenheim), Victoria von Frankenberg-Ludwigsdorf (née Freiin von Oppenheim), Dr. Stanislaus Graf Strachwitz , Karin Baroness von Ullmann (née Freiin von Oppenheim), Ingrid Freiin von Oppenheim, Friedrich Carl Freiherr von Oppenheim , Wolf Graf von Bredow , Clemens Carl Freiherr von Wrede , as well as the descendants of Robert Pferdmenges , Heinz Pferdmenges and Ilse Bscher. Victoria von Frankenberg and Ludwigsdorf died in the same year. She inherited her daughter Alix-May Countess von Faber-Castell . Georg Baron von Ullmann , who married Karin Freiin von Oppenheim in 1953 , became a new partner after 1954 and remained so until his death in 1972.
