Tilo ( Andrea in Scandinavia ) was a storm that hit a hurricane over Northern Europe and Central Europe on November 9, 2007, with its center over the North Sea, causing severe storm surges in this area . The damage caused by land masses going into the sea on German islands was enormous. People were not harmed.

overview

At the time mentioned above, the core of the storm was over southern Sweden . There were wind speeds measured up to 137 km / h, which the force 12 on the Beaufort scale corresponds.

Polar air flowed behind the cold front of the low and caused an early onset of winter. It snowed in many places in the high altitudes of Northern and Central Europe. The German low mountain ranges and the Alps were also affected . Snow also fell in Belgium and Eastern Europe .

In Germany , the German Weather Service warned of the storm on November 8 at 16:31. The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency warned of the storm surge.

The storm only reached hurricane strength over the North Sea. On the land side, there were gale-force gusts with wind speeds of up to 110 km / h.

With a water level of 3.33 meters above normal high water, the storm in Hamburg led to the worst storm surge since 1990. Parts of the Speicherstadt and the Altona fish market were under water.

In East Friesland the tide at Emden was 3.29 meters higher than normal, in Wilhelmshaven 3.08 meters, and on the island of Borkum 2.48 meters. At Gandersum , where the flood reached a level of 3.44 meters above normal, the Ems barrage was closed. In all of the East Frisian port towns outside of its protected area , there was considerable flooding, which also affected the Norddeich Mole Intercity long-distance train station . For the first time, the assumption was confirmed that the closing of the Ems barrage will increase the flood pollution on the East Frisian coast that is not protected by it. The situation is now countered with a partial increase in low dike sections.

Dune break-offs occurred on the islands of Juist , Langeoog , Spiekeroog and Wangerooge . Several 100,000 cubic meters of sand were washed from the beaches on the island of Helgoland . This has undermined the most recent significant efforts to protect the coastline . The ferry traffic to the islands had to be stopped the day before due to heavy seas.

Netherlands

In the Netherlands , the Maeslant storm surge barrier, which was built between 1991 and 1997, was closed for the first time due to a storm surge in order to protect the port of Rotterdam and the people living in the area. The same happened with the Hartel storm surge barrier and the Oosterschelde storm surge barrier .

Norway

In Norway , oil and gas production on the platforms has ceased. The Valhall (oil and gas field) and Ekofisk were affected .

United Kingdom

In the UK , the Met Office warned residents of the Orkney Islands and Shetland Islands of gusts of wind at speeds of up to 145 km / h.

The residents of Norfolk , Suffolk , Kent and Essex had to be warned by the authorities and several hundred people in Great Yarmouth had to be brought to safety. The Thames Barrier has been closed.
