history
The history of today's municipality of Ossiach was largely shaped by the Ossiach monastery over the centuries . The exact date of the foundation of the Benedictine monastery is not known, it was probably shortly before 1028; The oldest known documentary mention of the church comes from this year. The monastery was subordinate to the Patriarchate of Aquileja , but retained the bailiwick rights. Large stretches of land around Lake Ossiach, near Feldkirchen and in Rosental belonged to the monastery . The monastery developed into an important cultural center in the region and experienced its heyday, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries, which was reflected in the expansion and design of the monastery buildings and the church; however, a market settlement never developed near the monastery. In 1783 it was finally repealed by decree by Emperor Joseph II .
With the constitution of political communities in 1850, Ossiach was initially part of the greater Steindorf community . In 1894 the municipality of Glandorf was created by separating four cadastral communities, which was renamed Ossiach in the following year.In 1912, the municipality was reduced to the cadastral community of Ossiach through the re-establishment of a municipality of Glandorf.
With the emergence of summer tourism from the second half of the 19th century, Ossiach gradually developed into today's pure tourism community.

Ossiach Abbey : Originally the abbey church was built around the year 1000 as a Romanesque pillar basilica. First mentioned in a document in 1028, it is considered the oldest Benedictine monastery church in Carinthia. 65 abbots have been recorded in the chronicle of the order from the beginning of the 11th century until the abolition of the monastery by Emperor Josef II in 1783. After a major fire in 1484, the entire church was redesigned in the late Gothic style. Between 1737 and 1746 the church was almost completely renovated in the baroque style. The stucco work of the Wessobrunn school , the fresco paintings by the Carinthian painter Josef Ferdinand Fromiller, the baroque organ from 1680 and the richly decorated baroque pulpit should be emphasized .
In the 15th century, a defensive tower and mighty outer walls were built to protect against Turkish invasions. After the abolition of the monastery, the buildings threatened to crumble. It was not until 1965 to 1975 that the entire monastery complex with the collegiate church was restored.
The monastery buildings are now used as a venue for cultural events.
- The grave of the Polish King Bolesław II . The tomb slab bears the inscription: Rex Boleslaus Poloniae occisor sancti Stanislai Episcopi Cracoviensis (Bolesław King of Poland, Murderer of St. Stanislaus the Bishop of Cracow).
Regular events
The Ossiach Abbey is one of the venues for the Carinthian Summer . The Carinthian Summer was founded in 1969 by Jakob Stingl, a former pastor of the community, and Helmut Wobisch in Ossiach.
Every year in August the international handicraft market takes place in Ossiach. At this market, artisans from home and abroad present their works of art (clay, wood, glass art, painting, products made of fabric and wool).

The coat of arms and flag were awarded to the community on January 12, 1965. The official blazon of the coat of arms reads:
- In the red shield there is a slanting silver wave bar divided by ten blue wave lines, which is covered with three naturally colored lake trout swimming to the right.
