The Hörverlag published the work in four parts, each with six CDs with a total of 1365 minutes running time. With a total of 24 hours and 220 speakers, Otherland was advertised as the largest radio play production in German radio history. From January 19, 2004 to September 9, 2005, the radio play was produced in the Hessischer Rundfunk studios in Frankfurt am Main .

At the center of the plot is a gigantic computer network in which various virtual realities are simulated: Otherland tells the story of Paul Jonas, who escaped as a soldier in World War I and began a journey through wondrous worlds.

The radio play was realized with numerous effects. For the different narrative strands, different speakers are used for the role of the narrator.

Award

The German Academy of Performing Arts recognized Otherland as radio play of the month October 2004. Your reason:

“Paul Jonas, who flees as a soldier in World War I and begins a journey through wondrous worlds; the South African computer specialist Renie Sulaweyo, who with the help of Bushman! Xabbu wants to find out why her little brother fell into a coma; the American teenager Orlando Gardiner, who as Thargor the barbarian fights his way through virtual game worlds with his companion Pithlit - these are just a few of the countless characters, travel groups, so to speak, through the fantastic universe that Tad Williams' fantasy novel Otherland unfolds. The American's tetralogy comprises well over 3000 pages, the radio play version by Walter Adler has 250 speakers, lasts 24 hours and is considered the largest radio play production in the history of ARD. This quantity alone is remarkable. "
